Hughes: That’s really well done, and it’s beautifully framed.<br />

<strong>Dimmick</strong>: And I have another one at home that’s even more spectacular. So I kind <strong>of</strong> like all<br />

<strong>of</strong> it I guess.<br />

Hughes: The miniature over here (glancing toward an end table) – is that <strong>of</strong> your daughter?<br />

<strong>Dimmick</strong>: Yes, that’s my daughter, Dana. That’s done by Lisel Salzer, the wonderful portrait<br />

artist and enamelist who fled the Nazis and settled in Seattle. (Editor’s Note: Salzer died in<br />

2005 at the age <strong>of</strong> 99) … It’s a miniature that she did on metal. It took her more than three or<br />

four or five times. She did a little bit and then she fired it, puts on enamel. Then some more.<br />

Hughes: The lamp here reminds me <strong>of</strong> when I traveled in Asia. I really became fond <strong>of</strong> that<br />

Celadon, greenish pottery glaze. Have you had a chance to travel widely over the years?<br />

<strong>Dimmick</strong>: Oh yes.<br />

Hughes: Tell us where you’ve been?<br />

<strong>Dimmick</strong>: I’ve been all over Europe. I’ve been all over the Far East. … Japan, China, Hong<br />

Kong.<br />

Hughes: Was that vacation or business?<br />

<strong>Dimmick</strong>: All vacation. But I went to Europe several times with the Bar Association, starting<br />

in ’69, ’72, and on. They take you to Amsterdam and pick you up 30 days later in London, or<br />

vice-versa. And I traveled a lot with Betty Howard at that time.<br />

Hughes: Let’s get back to 1975 when Governor Dan Evans named you to the King County<br />

Superior Court. What prompted that appointment? Did you have an interview with the<br />

governor?<br />

<strong>Dimmick</strong>: Jim Dolliver, his chief <strong>of</strong> staff, called me up.<br />

Hughes: Had Dolliver been a good friend <strong>of</strong> yours since your college days?<br />

<strong>Dimmick</strong>: No, I hadn’t seen him over the years. But he called and said, “Dan Evans is going<br />

to appoint a superior court woman. Do you want the job?”<br />

And I said, “I don’t know.”<br />

And he said, “Well, do you or don’t you?” Kind <strong>of</strong> like that.<br />

So I said, “Well, OK.”<br />

I think I had an interview with the Bar Association. They had a standing committee on<br />
