Interview with Federal Judge Robert Lasnik about Judge <strong>Dimmick</strong><br />

Hughes: You and I should be so lucky<br />
to be as vibrant and not missing a<br />
beat as Judge <strong>Dimmick</strong> at 79.<br />
Lasnik: She’s amazing. She’s lovely<br />
too.<br />
Hughes: She looks 15 years younger<br />
than she is. I’m 65 and she looks like<br />
she’d be my classmate. She’s really<br />
interesting, too.<br />
Lasnik: I’m sure C.Z. Smith must have<br />
been jaw dropping at times, too, in<br />
that oral history.<br />
Hughes: It was 16 hours <strong>of</strong> jaw<br />
dropping. At the end <strong>of</strong> day one, I<br />
said, “Can you spare me some more<br />
time judge?” And he said, “Oh yeah.<br />
We have lots more to cover.” He is<br />
fascinating.<br />

Lasnik: He has had a fascinating life going back to the Justice Department.<br />
Hughes: He was de facto adopted at the age <strong>of</strong> 15 by an Ivy-League black educator who<br />
saw in Charles Z. Smith this brilliant young black boy and paid his way through school.<br />
Lasnik: It’s just amazing.<br />
Hughes: <strong>Carolyn</strong> <strong>Dimmick</strong> is portrayed, if you just read the one-dimensional clippings, as<br />
being this law-and-order kind <strong>of</strong> feisty but no-nonsense person. Clearly she’s no-nonsense<br />
but she’s also charming and witty.<br />
Lasnik: She is.<br />
