About the <strong>project</strong><br />
Aim<br />
Our goal is to contribute to the eradication of poverty by ensuring the provision of<br />
social protection for all, as elaborated by the ILO's Decent Work Agenda.<br />
Between 2009 and 2013 we will be working:<br />
• to empower trade unions and social organisations to work in alliances and advocate<br />
for social protection<br />
• to benefit people and organisations representing women, workers in the informal<br />
economy, migrants and people affected by HIV/AIDS<br />
• to build alliances and develop joint advocacy towards public authorities (local,<br />
regional and national governments, regional and international institutions and<br />
donors) to ensure that social protection becomes recognised as a fundamental right.<br />

The <strong>project</strong> covers 19 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East (see full<br />
list on back cover).<br />

About Social Protection<br />
Social Protection is a right!<br />
“Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security” (Article 22,<br />
Universal Declaration of Human Rights).<br />
Social protection works!<br />
• In Brazil, the Bolsa Familia programme provides income support for families earning below<br />
a certain level. It now covers <strong>about</strong> 11 million Brazilian families (45 million people or 3 times<br />
the population of The Netherlands).<br />
• In the Bangladeshi Cash for Education programme, cash transfers are dependent on<br />
children’s school attendance. The scheme has resulted in a 20 – 30% increase in school<br />
enrolment and these children are <strong>more</strong> likely to stay in school up to two years longer than<br />
other children.<br />
Social protection generates growth!<br />
By raising the income of the poor it increases domestic demand:<br />
• In Namibia, a social pension scheme has increased local spending. It is said that half the<br />
shops would close if it were not for pension day.<br />
• In Malawi, for every US$1 that was transferred to people in an emergency cash transfer pilot,<br />
an extra US$2.1 of additional local economic activity was created.<br />
Social Protection is affordable!<br />
Less than 2% of the Global Gross Domestic Product would be necessary to provide a<br />
basic set of social security benefits to all of the world’s poor.<br />
Realising Social Protection and Decent Work for All is a 4 years <strong>project</strong> funded by<br />
DFID under the Civil Society Challenge Fund and managed by SOLIDAR and UNISON.<br />
The official start date of the <strong>project</strong> is 1 October 2009 and its end date is 30 September 2013.
