A one-Piece Process
Unlike some other
manufacturers who use a
“two-piece process” in their
production of paving stones,
CST has remained committed
to their philosophy of solid
“one-piece construction” for
their paver and VERSA-LOK ®
wall products. This means the
concrete and color are mixed
and poured together creating
a one-piece product with the
same color and consistency
throughout. CST is confident
that this is the most reliable
way to guarantee long-term
color, strength and durability.
Face Mix:
A Two-Piece Process
A Face Mix is a common
manufacturing technique used
in the industry to save on the
cost of color. A face mix has
two mixes applied during the
stone’s manufacturing. A base
mix fills the mold to create the
paver, and then a thin topcoat
with the color is applied to
finish the manufacturing
process.

Permeable pavers allow for the readmission of water into the ground and the natural
re-charge of the aquifer, protecting the environment from dangerous pollutants

The Anatomy of
Permeable Paver Construction
Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement
(PICP) comprises a layer of solid concrete
pavers separated by joints filled with small
stones. Water enters the joints between the
pavers and into an “open-graded” basecrushed
stone layer with no small or fine
particles. The void spaces among the crushed
stone store water and infiltrate it back into the
soil subgrade. The stones in the joints provide
permeability, and the base filters stormwater
and helps reduce pollutants.

regulations hope to reduce environmental
impacts of increased runoff from roofs and
pavements. Permeable Pavers reduce runoff
and pollutants, recharges ground-water,
and helps reduce downstream erosion and

wanted to upgrade the curb appeal of their Skillman, NJ
home while at the same time create a gathering area for
family, friends and neighbors.

Ideas, Advice and Support
We then met with our landscape contractor, *Chris Demato
of Rock Bottom Landscaping, to let him know what we
were looking for. We wanted to enlarge the walkway in the
front of our house to make it more inviting and create a
small gathering area; a fire pit on a patio in the back of the
house with a sitting wall enclosing the area for privacy, a
safe way to transition from the driveway to the patio- as
our backyard is on a slope; and replace an unattractive
retaining wall. Chris came up with a fantastic design that
incorporated everything we were looking for and more.
We had difficulty deciding on which type of paver to use
and what color. Should we use various shapes and sizes?
Use a combination of different colors? As a registered CST
contractor, Chris mentioned that CST has a “House Calls”
program. We called CST and they sent a representative to
our home to work with us to finalize the product selection.
CST worked with our landscape contractor seamlessly
to come up with the perfect combination of shapes and
colors for the walkway, borders, landscape steps, retaining
wall, sitting wall, patio and fire pit. CST’s knowledge and
expertise, along with that of our landscape contractor really
brought our vision to life.

Paving Stone Installation Instructions
Professionals and do-it-yourself homeowners
alike can install interlocking concrete pavers
successfully. You will probably have to rent some
tools that the average homeowner does not have.
If you take your time and pay close attention to
the base preparation, you will be pleased with the
results.
Excavation:
Before digging, always call your local utility
company to locate any underground lines.
In general terms, a minimum of 4” of compacted
aggregate base is recommended for patios and
walkways, and 8” for residential driveways where
freeze/thaw conditions exist. Add 3” for the depth
of the bedding sand and the paver thickness to
determine the total depth to excavate. Excavation
should be 6” wider than the finished pavements
dimensions on sides where edge restraint is to
be used. Slope and grade are important to ensure
proper runoff. It is best to plan at least a 1/4” per
foot drop, but try not to exceed 1/2” per foot.
Base Preparation:
As with any building project, the finished pavers
will be only as good as the construction of the
base. For this reason, this is the MOST important
part of the installation process.
First, run your plate compactor over the
excavated area, making sure that the soil does not
get stuck to the bottom of the plate tamper. Each
pass should overlap the previous one by about 4”.
Compaction should be performed in one direction
(north-south) then a second time at a right angle
(east-west) to the first compaction. It is suggested
that a soil separation fabric be laid down over the
compacted sub grade, especially in moist or wet
areas, to separate virgin soil from the base. Now
spread your stone base material out evenly in a
2” layer. If material is dry and dusty, use a garden
hose to evenly moisten it down. This will help make
the gravel easier to rake and faster to compact.
Starting with the outer perimeter, use the plate
compactor to pack together the base, again
overlapping each pass about 4” and working
towards the center. You should make at least
two complete passes for each layer. Repeat
this process for each subsequent layer of base
material until the final thickness is achieved. After
final compaction, check the entire area for proper
pitch and level conditions. The base should now
reflect the final grade of your pavers. If you were
to place a straight edge on the surface, there
should be no more than a 1/4” gap at any point
along the straight edge.
Edge Restraints:
The borders for your layout design may now be
put into place. The edging is laid directly upon the
quarry process base and secured with 10” steel
spikes. One spike should be used every (2) feet
for walkways and patios and every one (1) foot for
driveways and radii.
Sand Setting Bed:
A setting bed of concrete sand can now be
spread on top of the compacted base. Note: It is
important to keep your sand dry. Always keep your
sand covered in case of rain. It is suggested that
you only screed sand for areas where you will be
laying pavers that same day. Lay the screed guides
(1” outside diameter electrical conduit, strips of
wood or other suitable rigid material) on top of the
compacted base material 4’-6’ apart and parallel.
For narrow areas such as walkways, the PVC
edging can be used as a guide with a notched 2x4”
board. When the pavers are set on the sand and
compacted, the 1” of sand will compress to 1/2” to
5/8” thickness.
Installation of Pavers:
All projects must start at a perfect 90-degree
angle. Use the 3-4-5-triangle method to establish
this. For an even mix of pavers, select pavers
from multiple cubes for optimum color blending.
Starting from a permanent edge such as a house,
driveway, or even a piece of rigid PVC edge
restraint, lay your first paver starting from either
side. String lines will assist in assuring straight
lines. Spacing between pavers should not exceed
1/8”. Set pavers lightly on the sand, never press or
hammer them in. If you are doing the project over
a couple of days, cover the entire area with plastic
overnight if rain is expected.
Compacting and Sweeping:
Spread and sweep sand over the entire top of
the pavers using a stiff bristle broom. To protect
the surface of the pavers prior to compacting,
lay down a mat, cardboard, thin plywood or soil
separation fabric on top of the spread sand.
Vibrating with a plate compactor will force the
sand between the joints, stabilizing and leveling
the final surface. Excess sand should be swept in
the joints. Sweep again as necessary.
Before using our products please inspect your
delivery thoroughly. If you feel that there is a
problem, please do not install the product.

Excavación:
Antes de excavar, siempre llame a la
compañía local de utilidades para localizar
cualquier lineas de metro que existan.
En terminos general, un minimo de 4” de
base compactada agregada es recomendado
para los patios y pasillos y 8” para las entradas
residenciales de carros adonde condiciones
de congelación/descongelacion existen.
Añadele 3” para la profundidad de la cama
de arena y el grueso de los adoquines para
determinar la profundidad total necesitada de
excavar. La excavación debe de ser 6” mas
ancho que las dimensiones de los adoquines
terminados, en los lados adonde se vaya a usar

Los bordes para su diseño ahora puede ser
puesto en marcha. Los bordes se colocan
directamente sobre el proceso de base de
cantera y es asegurado con picas de asero
de 10”. Una pica debe ser usada a cada dos
(2) pies para pasillos y patios y cada un (1) pie
para entrada de vehículos y radio.
Cama de Configuración de Arena:
Una cama de arena concreta ahora se
puede propagar en la parte superior de la base
compactada. Nota: Es importante mantener
la arena seca. Siempre mantenga la arena
cubierta en caso de lluvia. Es recomendado
que solamente mida la cantidad de arena
necesitada para el area adonde colocara los
adoquines ese mismo dia. Colocar las guias
( 1” en diámetro exterior de los conductos
eléctricos, tiras de madera, u otros materiales

bordes de PVC se puede usar como guia
con un pedazo de madera 2x4. Cuando los
adoquines se establezcan en la arena y sean
compactados, 1” de arena se comprimira ½” a
5/8” del grosor.
Instalación de Adoquines:

1-Leveling pad preparation
VERSA-LOK® walls should be placed on a
leveling pad of compacted gravel, crushed stone
or coarse sand about 6” thick and 24” wide. The
first course of VERSA-LOK® should be embedded
below grade approximately 1 ⁄10 the of the exposed
wall height. Excavate to lines and grades you’ve
established for the wall, allowing for leveling pad
and unit embedment.
2-Install base course
Place VERSA-LOK® units on prepared leveling
pad. As you proceed, level each unit front to back,
side to side and with adjacent units. Leveling
is critical at this stage, so take your time. Align
straight wall sections using a string line or by
sighting down the grooves on the top of each unit.
If your wall has a corner, begin at the corner and
work out from there.
3-Backfill
Fill in and compact native soil behind, and in
front of the base course level with the grade in
front of the wall. Next, place and compact 13” of
drainage aggregate behind the units.
4-Installing successive courses
Stack one course at a time. Set units back 3/4”.
Insert two pins in front holes of units so they fall
into the rear slots of the units beneath. Tap pins
down with a pin and mallet. Place and compact
drainage aggregate behind each course as it is
completed.
5-Geosynthetic soil reinforcement
If your wall is higher than four feet or
shoulders significant loads, you will need to install
geosynthetic soil reinforcement. As each course
is laid, place soil reinforcement horizontally on top
of compacted backfill and about one inch from the
front of the VERSA-LOK® units.
6-Installing caps
Complete your wall by placing VERSA-LOK®
cap units on the top course. Install caps with a
slight overhang (recommended), set back or flush
with the wall face. Use VERSA-LOK® concrete
adhesive to secure cap units to wall.

VERSA-LOK® es cuatro pies. Lugar, tierra y

1 – Nivelacion de plataforma de preparacion
Paredes VERSA-LOK® deben de colocarse
en una plataforma de preparacion compuesta
de grava compactada, piedra tirturada o arena
gruesa con grosor de 6” y 24” de ancho. El
primer curso de VERSA-LOK® debe de ser
integrado debajo del grado aproximadamente
1/10 de la altura visible de la pared. Excave
hasta la lineas y grados que haya establecido
para la pared, permitiendo para la plataforma
de nivelacion y emportamiento de unidad.
2. – Instalar curso de base
Coloque unidades de VERSA-LOK® en
plataforma de nivelacion. A medida que
avance, nivele cada unidad de adelante hacia
atras, de lado a lado, y con unidades contiguas.
Nivelacion es crucial en esta etapa, haci que
tome su tiempo. Alinear secciones de paredes
rectas usando una linea de medida o señalando
los surcos encima de cada unidad. Si su pared
tiene esquina, empieze por la esquina y trabaje
de ahi hacia afuera.
3 - Llenado
Rellene y comprima tierra detras y delante

5 - Refuerzo de suelo geosintetico
Si su pared es mas alta de cuatro pies
o cargas significantes a peso de hombro,
necesitara que instalar refuerzo de suelo
geosintetico. Cada vez que se extenda
un curso, coloque el refuerzo de suelo
geosintetico en una manera horizontal sobre el
llenado compactado y como una pulgada del
lado delantero de las unidades VERSA-LOK®.
6. - Instalacion de tapas
Termine su pared colocando tapas de
unidades VERSA-LOK® sobre el curso
posterior. Instale las tapas con un pequeño
leve ( recomendado), retroceder o nivelar
con el espacio de la pared. Use adhesivo de
concreto VERSA-LOK® para asegurar las tapas
de las unidades hacia la pared.

Move That Bus!
CST, was among a group of builders and suppliers selected to help
in the construction of a home renovated on the hit show Extreme
Makeover:Home Edition. The episode aired on Sunday, October 17,
2011.
The episode based in Crawford, New York, chronicled the surprise
home renovation for the Korpai family. The family, dedicated to
advocating for their daughter, Hailey, who was born with dwarfism,
was chosen to have their lives changed with a dream renovation
of their previously unsafe home. While their house used to have
rooms that were unable to keep Hailey safe and secure, the Extreme
Makeover:Home Edition. team was challenged with the task of
renovating the house to meet the specifications and safety measures
that Hailey’s lifestyle requires. More importantly, they wanted a place
where Hailey could have the freedom and independence to live her
own life.
The Extreme Makeover:Home Edition. design team had just
seven days to build a brand new home for the Korpai family, one that
is safe, secure and accessible for Hailey and Little People of America
visitors. The Korpai family had been whisked away on a Disney Cruise
vacation to the Bahamas, while Extreme Makeover:Home Edition.
team leader Ty Pennington, designers Jillian Harris, Ed Sanders
and Paul DiMeo, and local builders Hearthstone Commercial &
Residential Contracting, as well as community volunteers, built the
structure.

build included paving stones for a walkway, patio and fire pit and

stones will ensure that the Korpai family will enjoy their patio for

Giving Back To Our Community
Eagle Scout David
Schloemer teamed up
with CST for a remarkable
restoration project honoring
local Veterans.
Schloemer was able to completely restore and
refinish the memorial, making it more aesthetically
pleasing and a grander tribute to those fallen
troops whom the memorial remembers. The new
Veteran’s Circle was unveiled and dedicated in
time for Memorial Day. Schloemer took on this
Service Project as his final task in his quest to
become an Eagle Scout. As mandated by the Boy
Scouts of America, each Life Scout who has intent
to become an Eagle Scout must plan, develop,
and give leadership to others in a service project
that will benefit their community. The benefitting
organization, the scout’s Scoutmaster, and District
must approve the project chosen by the scout
before they can begin.
David Schloemer, a former Life Scout of Troop
386, received a donation of pavers and materials
from Concrete Stone and Tile Corp. to complete
his Eagle Scout Service Project. Schloemer, a
14-year-old Eagle Scout, reached out to the CST
Team regarding his aspirations; CST was impressed
by Schloemer’s proposed project and was happy
to donate CST paving stones and VERSA- LOK®
retaining wall material to aid him in his endeavor.
The project was a restoration of the Veteran’s
Circle at Memorial Park in Montgomery, NY; a
town conveniently nearby a CST Manufacturing
Plant. With the paving stones provided by CST,
CST General Manager, Steve Guida,
commented on Schloemer’s contribution to the
Montgomery Community, “When approached
by the local Eagle Scouts with their desire to do a
major facelift to the local Veteran’s Memorial for
the Memorial Day ceremony, we felt being part of
the community was important.” Guida continued,
“We donated some VERSA LOK® retaining wall
and MONO-CAST® pavers and the rest was really
David and his team, they did the hard part.”

hard work and dedication and the honorable
distinction of becoming an Eagle Scout. Below you

natural salts come to the surface and leave behind
a white deposit that can normally be brushed off.
