Winona campus<br />

graduates 860<br />

On Saturday, May 8, the Winona campus <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> hosted two<br />

commencement ceremonies to mark the end <strong>of</strong><br />

the academic year.<br />

During Winona campus undergraduate<br />

commencement, 285 students received<br />

bachelor <strong>of</strong> arts degrees. An honorary Doctorate<br />

<strong>of</strong> Educational Leadership was conferred upon<br />

Brother Lawrence Goyette, FSC, founder <strong>of</strong> the<br />

San Miguel Schools movement. And,<br />

Outstanding Male and Female Seniors Nathan<br />

Semsch and Jennifer Lawrence gave student<br />

perspectives.<br />

Dr. Gibbs replaces Tim Burchill<br />

’68, who was named the first fulltime<br />

executive director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Hendrickson Institute for Ethical<br />

Leadership.<br />

John Pyle, Ed.D., formerly associate<br />

vice president for enrollment<br />

management at the Twin Cities<br />

campus, was named vice president<br />

for Graduate and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Programs — Twin Cities campus.<br />

Brother Robert Smith ’76, FSC,<br />

Ph.D., was named vice president for<br />

mission. He is a tenured associate<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> theology and chair <strong>of</strong><br />

the department. In August 2003,<br />

he returned to the Winona campus<br />

after three years as the dean and<br />

director <strong>of</strong> Christ the Teacher<br />

Institute for Education in Nairobi,<br />

Kenya. He is also the director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Center for the Enhancement <strong>of</strong><br />

Learning and Teaching.<br />

During the Winona campus School <strong>of</strong> Graduate and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Programs commencement, approximately 575 students in the six<br />

graduate programs administered from Winona participated; 691 students<br />

were eligible to commence. Along with the conferring <strong>of</strong> degrees, Erica<br />

Brown, M.Ed. in Teaching and Learning, and Chad Richtman, M.S. in<br />

Geographic Information Science, gave student perspectives.<br />

The <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s Nairobi campus graduated 54 during its ninth<br />

annual commencement ceremony on May 15. The Twin Cities campus<br />

graduated 385 during commencement ceremonies June 5.<br />

$500,000 gift<br />

to endow<br />

scholarship<br />

The Philip H. Corboy Foundation <strong>of</strong><br />

Chicago has made a gift <strong>of</strong><br />

$500,000 to <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s<br />

<strong>University</strong> to establish the Philip H.<br />

Corboy — Mary A. Dempsey<br />

Endowed Scholarship.<br />

Philip Corboy, a prominent<br />

personal injury trial lawyer in<br />

Chicago, was educated by the<br />

Christian Brothers at <strong>Saint</strong> George<br />

High School (Evanston, Ill.) and is a<br />

past trustee <strong>of</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s College.<br />

Mary A. Dempsey, Corboy’s wife<br />

and a 1975 graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>Saint</strong><br />

Mary’s College, serves as<br />

commissioner <strong>of</strong> the Chicago Public<br />

Library for the city <strong>of</strong> Chicago. In<br />

1999, <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong><br />

awarded Dempsey an honorary<br />

Doctor <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts Education<br />

degree for her accomplishments in<br />

advancing the status <strong>of</strong> public<br />

libraries and positioning the<br />

Chicago Public Library as a national<br />

model.<br />

Brother President Louis<br />

DeThomasis said he is “pleased and<br />

grateful that people <strong>of</strong> such<br />

integrity and character as Phil<br />

Corboy and Mary Dempsey will<br />

now be associated with <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s<br />

<strong>University</strong> — and more importantly<br />

with scholarships for our students —<br />

in perpetuity. This wonderful and<br />

generous endowed scholarship will<br />

make it possible for future leaders<br />

<strong>of</strong> the caliber <strong>of</strong> Phil and Mary to<br />

enjoy access to a <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s<br />

<strong>University</strong> education.”<br />

Every year, there will be a<br />

new Corboy-Dempsey Scholar<br />

in the freshman class at <strong>Saint</strong><br />

Mary’s <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong>.<br />

Scholarships will be renewable for<br />

four years. The Corboy-Dempsey<br />

Scholarship honors and perpetuates<br />

the long-standing relationship<br />

between <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong><br />

and the Greater Chicago area,<br />

home to more than 4,400 <strong>Saint</strong><br />

Mary’s alumni. Students eligible for<br />

the Corboy-Dempsey Scholarship<br />

must graduate from a Chicago-area<br />

high school.<br />
