The CTIE program graduates<br />

students with bachelor degrees in<br />

secondary education and prepares<br />

them to teach in third-world<br />

Catholic secondary schools.<br />

Students at the Maryknoll Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> African Studies are <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

missionaries who are learning the<br />

cultures and religions <strong>of</strong> Africa.<br />

Four years ago, students at<br />

<strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s began the dance event<br />

as a way to raise money to send<br />

Taylor Richmond and his family to<br />

Disneyland. Taylor is the son <strong>of</strong><br />

Nick and Nikki Richmond <strong>of</strong><br />

Cochrane, Wis., and Nikki works in<br />

the SMU Office <strong>of</strong> Campus Ministry.<br />

Taylor was diagnosed with Ataxia-<br />

Telangectasia (A-T) at the age <strong>of</strong> 5.<br />

This year’s dance and<br />

silent auction raised more than<br />

$8,000 for the SMU Nairobi campus.<br />

during this year’s fourth annual<br />

Taylor Richmond Benefit Dance<br />

and silent auction. The Johnny<br />

Holm Band entertained a crowd <strong>of</strong><br />

approximately 450 people at the<br />

Winona campus March 20.<br />

Proceeds from this year’s formal<br />

event will benefit the <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s<br />

Nairobi campus, comprised <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Nearly 450 people attended the Taylor Richmond Benefit March 20 at<br />

<strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong>. The Johnny Holm Band entertained the crowd at this<br />

student-organized annual event.<br />

SMU honors four at<br />

Founder’s Day ceremony<br />

At the <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> Founder’s Day ceremony,<br />

last spring, special honors were given to a staff<br />

member, Catholic educator, and outstanding male and<br />

female senior students.<br />

Founder’s Day is the annual<br />

celebration <strong>of</strong> the founding <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> in 1912<br />

Heffron. Sister Katherine DuVal,<br />

SSND, Ed.D., an advocate for<br />

Catholic education, was<br />

recognized with an honorary<br />

doctorate in Educational<br />

Leadership. Sister DuVal is<br />

currently superintendent <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Sister Katherine DuVal<br />

Mankato Area Catholic School<br />

Community and was recognized<br />

for her lifelong role in education<br />

through leadership, teaching and service.<br />

Francis “Fritz” Speck (Master’s ’89) <strong>of</strong> Winona<br />

received the <strong>2004</strong> Bishop Patrick Heffron Award for<br />

service to the university. Speck was recognized for his<br />

valued contributions and long-term commitment to the<br />

Jennifer Lawrence<br />

university and its staff and<br />

students as director <strong>of</strong><br />

administrative computing.<br />

The Outstanding Female<br />

Senior Award was given to<br />

Jennifer Lawrence, Chaska,<br />

Minn. The daughter <strong>of</strong> Daniel<br />

and Karen Lawrence, she<br />

double-majored in theology and<br />

pastoral/youth ministry and<br />

minored in human services. She<br />

plans to serve in the Peace<br />

Corps and is interested in<br />

international missionary and<br />

nonpr<strong>of</strong>it work.<br />

The Outstanding Male<br />

Senior Award was given to<br />

Nathan Semsch, son <strong>of</strong> Michael<br />

and Judy Semsch <strong>of</strong> Edina,<br />

Minn. Following graduation, he<br />

planned to enter into project<br />

management for commercial<br />

construction. He majored in<br />

business management.<br />
