INSTITUTES AND AFFILIATE PROGRAMS<br />

Christ the Teacher Institute for Education <strong>of</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong><br />

Located at <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s Nairobi Campus, 30 minutes outside the city center <strong>of</strong> Nairobi, Kenya, Christ the<br />

Teacher Institute for Education (CTIE) provides course work in teacher education leading to a three-year<br />

diploma in teacher education and a four-year bachelor <strong>of</strong> education degree. CTIE <strong>of</strong>fers courses during<br />

a year-long three-semester academic year that year-round. Students who successfully complete the prescribed<br />

coursework, including student teaching, will be awarded a diploma in teacher education at the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> three years. At that time, students may apply to complete a fourth year <strong>of</strong> study, and those successfully<br />

completing the work will be awarded the bachelor <strong>of</strong> education degree. The diploma in teacher education<br />

requires the completion <strong>of</strong> 110 semester hours. The bachelor <strong>of</strong> education degree requires the completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> 146 semester hours. At present, teaching concentrations are <strong>of</strong>fered in Christian religious education,<br />

English, geography, history, mathematics, and biology. Approximately 200 students attend CTIE.<br />

GeoSpatial Services<br />

GeoSpatial Services (GSS) is a full-service provider <strong>of</strong> geographic information systems (GIS) development<br />

services and in the natural resource assessment services. GeoSpatial Services is a program <strong>of</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Mary's</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>, with operations on the Winona Campus, the <strong>University</strong>'s new Prairie Island Field Station, and<br />

on the main Minneapolis campus. GeoSpatial Services has a rich history <strong>of</strong> developing geographic<br />

information systems for a broad spectrum <strong>of</strong> clients in both government and private industry. The GIS<br />

discipline grew out <strong>of</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Mary's</strong> <strong>University</strong>'s long commitment to research <strong>of</strong> the Upper Mississippi<br />

River, where GIS was applied as an analysis and trending tool for biological studies. Use <strong>of</strong> GIS for trend<br />

analysis is a key strength <strong>of</strong> GeoSpatial Services. Target industries include natural resources, and oil and<br />

gas pipelines. GSS also has experience in developing GIS for clients in a variety <strong>of</strong> other industries and<br />

applications. GSS developed and grew is natural resources program through the National Park Service's<br />

Natural Resource Condition Assessment Program. GSS is a recognized leader in providing the Park Service<br />

resource assessment services for National Parks. GSS has grown this program and is also providing the<br />

NPS climate change vulnerability assessments for resource areas.<br />

The Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership<br />

The Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership is committed to developing emerging and current leaders<br />

to live lives <strong>of</strong> ethical leadership and service, and serves as a forum for the exploration <strong>of</strong> ethical issues.<br />

Through the tremendous generosity and vision <strong>of</strong> Bill ’39 and Jean Hendrickson, <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> created the Tomorrow’s Leaders <strong>University</strong> and High School Scholarship Programs: The<br />

“Tomorrow’s Leaders High School Scholarship Program” involves 60 schools in the Midwest and provides<br />

a post-secondary scholarship upon the completion <strong>of</strong> a leadership service project in the student’s community.<br />

The “Tomorrow’s Leadership <strong>University</strong> Scholarship” has 17 named and endowed scholarships<br />

to serve over 60 <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s students. Students agree to commit to a lifestyle characterized by good<br />

character, scholarship and service to the community.<br />

The Institute <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> programming to develop creative, ethical and globally oriented leaders:<br />

The annual Hendrickson Forum recognizes ethical leaders with an annual award and features renowned<br />

speakers to address the Twin Cities community about topics related to ethical leadership, locally and<br />

around the globe. A partnership with the <strong>Minnesota</strong> Trade Office provides the opportunity for the Twin<br />

Cities and <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s communities to attend programs that focus on international business, such as the<br />

export process and contract negotiation. The Under-Told Stories Project, featured on PBS, produces inter-<br />
