Personal development courses enhance academic skills; further the understanding <strong>of</strong> liberal and<br />

interdisciplinary learning; promote self-understanding; develop personal communication, selfmanagement<br />

and leadership skills; and foster career and life decision-making skills. The courses<br />

allow students to address both universal and unique needs to assist them in maximizing their<br />

educational experience. More specifically, the coaching classes are designed to prepare students for<br />

a comprehensive background in the field <strong>of</strong> coaching. It is recommended that students take CO152<br />

Theory <strong>of</strong> Coaching prior to taking other coaching courses, as this course provides an introduction to<br />

all aspects <strong>of</strong> coaching. Courses are <strong>of</strong>fered by pr<strong>of</strong>essional staff from academic advising, the academic<br />

skills center, athletics, career services, internships, and counseling services.<br />

PD101 Career Exploration 1 credit<br />

This course is intended to help students decide on a major field <strong>of</strong> study as well as to provide<br />

information on how to make good career decisions within the larger context <strong>of</strong> life/work planning.<br />

Students discover their particular skills, values, interests, and abilities through the use <strong>of</strong> various<br />

assessment tools. Various research and information gathering techniques are utilized. Graded pass/fail.<br />

PD108 College Study Skills 1 credit<br />

This course is designed to equip students with the tools and strategies that to enable them to become<br />

independent learners. This course is open to all students, however, some students are required to take<br />

this course based on ACT scores and high school GPA. This course may not be substituted for PD110.<br />

Students may not earn credit for both PD108 and PD110.<br />

PD109 College Reading Enrichment 1 credit<br />

This course is designed to help students improve their college reading skills through customized<br />

reading activities. Students learn to apply effective reading strategies to their university course work.<br />

Graded pass/fail. Offered spring semester only.<br />

PD110 College Reading and Study Skills 2 credits<br />

This course is designed to equip students with the tools and strategies that enables them to become<br />

independent readers and learners. This course is open to all students, however, some students are<br />

required to take this course based on ACT scores and high school GPA. If it is a required course for a<br />

student, the student must complete the course. Offered fall semester only. Students may not earn credit<br />

for both PD110 and P108.<br />

PD111 Study and Reading Strategies 1 credit<br />

This course is designed to help PASS students apply the study and reading skills they learned in PD110.<br />

The students develop study and reading strategies for each <strong>of</strong> the courses they are enrolled in. The<br />

instructor monitors the student’s progress in each class and help the student assess the effectiveness <strong>of</strong><br />

the study strategies that they applied to each course. Offered spring semester only. Prerequisites: PASS<br />

students who have successfully completed PD110. Graded pass/fail.<br />

PD116 Strategies for Success 1 credit<br />

The goal <strong>of</strong> this course is to help students make the transition from needing external supports to<br />

personally evaluating, motivating, and taking responsibility for their own unique academic and personal<br />

needs. The course focuses on developing intra-personal and interpersonal skills which contributes to<br />

effective self-management in the university setting. Course content and assignments are structured<br />

to encourage reflection and personal goal-setting. This course is <strong>of</strong>fered only in the fall semester.<br />

Prerequisite: concurrent participation in the PASS program.<br />
