MU175 Ear Training II 2 credits<br />
This is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Ear Training I. The objective <strong>of</strong> this course is to continue to develop aural<br />
skills involving melody, rhythm and harmony. Concepts covered include: sight-singing, advanced<br />
one voice dictation, simple two voice dictation, identification <strong>of</strong> chord structures, error detection and<br />
simple harmonic dictation. Classroom and lab components are both integral to this course. Offered fall<br />
semester. Prerequisite: MU170.<br />
MU181 Voice Class 2 credits<br />
An introduction to vocal production, breathing, tone development, diction, vocal improvisation and<br />
appropriate repertoire.<br />
MU191 Guitar Class 1 credit<br />
A practical introduction to the guitar designed for beginning students. Basic technique, chords, styles<br />
and simple melodies are covered. Recommended for Music Education majors.<br />
MU240 Percussion Methods 2 credits<br />

MU241 Brass Methods 2 credits<br />

These courses are designed to acquaint the music student with the materials, techniques and problems<br />
involved in the teaching, conducting and performance <strong>of</strong> the various instruments. Courses required for<br />
music education majors. Offered in alternate spring semesters.<br />
MU255 Jazz History 3 credits<br />
This course examines unique Western and non-Western aspects <strong>of</strong> jazz and its relationship to the<br />
Afro-American culture. It is intended to give students an introduction to various styles <strong>of</strong> jazz from its<br />
beginning in the early 1900s to the present. Students study the cultural context <strong>of</strong> jazz, what to listen for<br />
and some basic aspects <strong>of</strong> how it is performed. Offered in alternate spring semesters.<br />
MU260 Music Theory III 3 credits<br />
This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Music Theory II. Music Theory III, along with its predecessors, Music<br />
Theory I–II enables the student to think critically about music <strong>of</strong> all periods and styles. Concepts covered<br />
include: augmented 6th chords, enharmonicism, altered dominants, sonata form, and the breakdown <strong>of</strong><br />
tonality. Offered spring semester. Prerequisite: MU165.<br />
MU270 Ear Training III 2 credits<br />
This is a lab course and is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Ear Training II. The objective <strong>of</strong> this course is to continue<br />
to develop aural skills involving melody, rhythm and harmony. Concepts covered include: complex<br />
one voice dictation, two voice dictation, harmonic dictation and complex sight singing. Offered spring<br />
semester. Prerequisite: MU175.<br />
MU299 Sophomore Review 0 credit<br />
A comprehensive review <strong>of</strong> transcripts, a portfolio <strong>of</strong> work, and a juried performance examination<br />
normally occurring during the second semester <strong>of</strong> the sophomore year.<br />
MU300 Introduction to Electronic Music & MIDI 2 credits<br />
154
