Music<br />

Music Performance Major (52-60 credits):<br />

The music performance major is designed for a student who has both a strong interest and welldeveloped<br />

skills in musical performance in one or more areas. It may be combined with the Master <strong>of</strong><br />

Arts in Instruction fifth year education program. Future career plans may include graduate school to<br />

further prepare for a pr<strong>of</strong>essional performing career.<br />

Students majoring in the vocal performance track must demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in at least one language<br />

other than English, preferably a language found in a significant body <strong>of</strong> vocal literature from the standard<br />

western art music repertoire. Language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency may be demonstrated by either the satisfactory<br />

completion (all grades C or better) <strong>of</strong> at least two years <strong>of</strong> foreign language study at the secondary level, or<br />

by completion <strong>of</strong> at least two semesters <strong>of</strong> foreign language study at the college level.<br />

Music Industry Major (47-50 credits):<br />

The music industry program is designed to deliver relevant educational programs in music business and<br />

music technology, recognizing the traditions <strong>of</strong> our liberal arts context. <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />

B.A. degree with a music industry major in either a technology track or a business track. Both <strong>of</strong> these<br />

programs share a common core <strong>of</strong> required music courses that have been updated to reflect the needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> today’s musician in an ever changing high tech world. By completing a four-year B.A. degree, students<br />

have the advantage <strong>of</strong> a liberal arts education from <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> and technical training in music.<br />

Music industry/business track majors take courses from the business department at <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s as well<br />

as gaining invaluable job experience by completing an internship in the pr<strong>of</strong>essional world <strong>of</strong> music<br />

business <strong>of</strong>f campus. The university has been <strong>of</strong>fering music business degrees for over 25 years. Offcampus<br />

music industry internships are available for credit using a wide range <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional venues.<br />

Examples <strong>of</strong> internship sites include the Universal Music Group in Minneapolis, MN; Warner, Elekra<br />

Asylum Records in Barrington, IL; KNXR Studios in Rochester, MN; Schmitt Music in Rochester, MN;<br />

Soundstations Studio in La Crosse, WI; Leithold’s Music in La Crosse, WI; and the Wenger Music Corp.<br />

Music industry/technology track majors gain an understanding and working knowledge <strong>of</strong> basic<br />

recording techniques as well as learning how to do live sound. Students in this program take six music<br />

technology courses and labs, as well as courses in other areas such as physics and computer science.<br />

Students also complete a field exploration project utilizing the knowledge and experience gained from<br />
