English Education Major (38 credits + education course work):<br />
The English education major is designed to prepare students for a career in secondary school teaching.<br />
In addition to the requirements listed below, students must complete the Teacher Education Program<br />
(secondary level) to be certified. Please note: course work leading to teaching certification may be<br />
reconfigured for this area <strong>of</strong> study. Licensure requirements are subject to change; therefore, students<br />
considering teaching in this area should be in continuous contact with the chair <strong>of</strong> this program and the<br />

Literature Major (41 credits):<br />
The literature major <strong>of</strong>fers students a representative study <strong>of</strong> British and American literature, other<br />
literatures written in English, and world literatures in translation. It provides students the opportunity<br />
to develop their writing and critical thinking skills in small seminar settings. Students are encouraged<br />
to take part in SMU’s London semester, preferably during their junior or senior year, and to study a<br />
foreign language. The lterature major highlights cultural competency and prepares students for any job<br />
or pr<strong>of</strong>ession that requires the skills <strong>of</strong> critical reading and analysis. It is also excellent preparation for<br />
graduate or pr<strong>of</strong>essional programs in English, law, journalism, and business.<br />
