Highland, Fabian are honored by the Christian Brothers

The De La Salle Christian Brothers have bestowed
Letters of Affiliation upon Dr. Jeffrey Highland,
university provost and vice president of the college,
and Father Andrew Fabian, OP, professor of philosophy.
Affiliation, the highest honor given by the Brothers to
their friends and associates, was approved by Superior
General Brother Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria and his
General Council in Rome.
Brother President Louis DeThomasis and Brother
Jerome Rademacher ’58, director of the SMU Brothers’
community, presented the Letters of Affiliation at the
university’s Christmas dinner, Dec. 17.
“Both of these fine men have devoted much of
their working lives to the mission of the Christian
Brothers,” said Brother Louis. “We are tremendously
grateful for their contributions to the education of
young men and women at this institution.”
Dr. Highland has served Saint Mary’s in a variety of
roles since 1977, including dean of the School of
Humanities and Sciences, and director of the Core
Studies Program. A professor of political science, in
1988 Dr. Highland was honored by the Christian
Brothers as a Distinguished Lasallian Educator. In 1991
he received the Bishop Heffron Service Award from
Saint Mary’s. In addition to his administrative and
teaching duties, Dr. Highland was president of the
Saint Mary’s chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma national
Catholic honor society, and is moderator of the Phi Mu
Alpha music fraternity.
Father Fabian, a priest of the Dominican order, has
taught philosophy to hundreds of students at Saint
Mary’s since 1964. Held in the highest esteem by
Dr. Jeffrey Highland,
Father Andrew Fabian
faculty and generations of students, in 1981 he was
honored with the university’s Brother Charles Severin
Award for Excellence in Teaching. Father Fabian serves
as celebrant at university Masses and special liturgies,
and was a member of the Saint Anne Hospice ethics
committee.

song performed
Family Weekend,
Sept. 27-29
Hundreds of students got
reacquainted with their families
after a month of college had
transpired, during Family Weekend
2002, Sept. 27-29 on the Winona
campus. A full slate of fun activities
and events was available to
students, their families and the
public, including the Fall Frolic
fun run, performances by musical
groups, and sporting events.
The department of theatre arts
presented “The Importance of
Being Earnest,” and the new Saint
Mary’s school song, “Alma Mater,”
was performed at the Concert
Band/Concert Choir concert. Words
and music to the song were written
by Dr. Patrick O’Shea, choral

Parents and families came from
all corners of the map. Siblingstudents
Mary ’06 and Megan ’03
Coyle had a family member travel
all the way from Germany, while
Aubrey ’06 and Greg ’04 Hollnagel
had a group of nine visit them,
including both sets of grandparents
traveling all the way from Florida.
