Highland, Fabian are honored by the Christian Brothers<br />

campus during WWII (1943)<br />

The De La Salle Christian Brothers have bestowed<br />

Letters <strong>of</strong> Affiliation upon Dr. Jeffrey Highland,<br />

university provost and vice president <strong>of</strong> the college,<br />

and Father Andrew Fabian, OP, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> philosophy.<br />

Affiliation, the highest honor given by the Brothers to<br />

their friends and associates, was approved by Superior<br />

General Brother Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria and his<br />

General Council in Rome.<br />

Brother President Louis DeThomasis and Brother<br />

Jerome Rademacher ’58, director <strong>of</strong> the SMU Brothers’<br />

community, presented the Letters <strong>of</strong> Affiliation at the<br />

university’s Christmas dinner, Dec. 17.<br />

“Both <strong>of</strong> these fine men have devoted much <strong>of</strong><br />

their working lives to the mission <strong>of</strong> the Christian<br />

Brothers,” said Brother Louis. “We are tremendously<br />

grateful for their contributions to the education <strong>of</strong><br />

young men and women at this institution.”<br />

Dr. Highland has served <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s in a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

roles since 1977, including dean <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong><br />

Humanities and Sciences, and director <strong>of</strong> the Core<br />

Studies Program. A pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> political science, in<br />

1988 Dr. Highland was honored by the Christian<br />

Brothers as a Distinguished Lasallian Educator. In 1991<br />

he received the Bishop Heffron Service Award from<br />

<strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s. In addition to his administrative and<br />

teaching duties, Dr. Highland was president <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s chapter <strong>of</strong> Delta Epsilon Sigma national<br />

Catholic honor society, and is moderator <strong>of</strong> the Phi Mu<br />

Alpha music fraternity.<br />

Father Fabian, a priest <strong>of</strong> the Dominican order, has<br />

taught philosophy to hundreds <strong>of</strong> students at <strong>Saint</strong><br />

Mary’s since 1964. Held in the highest esteem by<br />

Dr. Jeffrey Highland,<br />

faculty and generations <strong>of</strong> students, in 1981 he was<br />

honored with the university’s Brother Charles Severin<br />

Award for Excellence in Teaching. Father Fabian serves<br />

as celebrant at university Masses and special liturgies,<br />

and was a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Saint</strong> Anne Hospice ethics<br />

committee.<br />

Family Weekend,<br />

Sept. 27-29<br />

Hundreds <strong>of</strong> students got<br />

reacquainted with their families<br />

after a month <strong>of</strong> college had<br />

transpired, during Family Weekend<br />

2002, Sept. 27-29 on the Winona<br />

campus. A full slate <strong>of</strong> fun activities<br />

and events was available to<br />

students, their families and the<br />

public, including the Fall Frolic<br />

fun run, performances by musical<br />

groups, and sporting events.<br />

The department <strong>of</strong> theatre arts<br />

presented “The Importance <strong>of</strong><br />

Being Earnest,” and the new <strong>Saint</strong><br />

Mary’s school song, “Alma Mater,”<br />

was performed at the Concert<br />

Band/Concert Choir concert. Words<br />

and music to the song were written<br />

by Dr. Patrick O’Shea, choral<br />

Parents and families came from<br />

all corners <strong>of</strong> the map. Siblingstudents<br />

Mary ’06 and Megan ’03<br />

Coyle had a family member travel<br />

all the way from Germany, while<br />

Aubrey ’06 and Greg ’04 Hollnagel<br />

had a group <strong>of</strong> nine visit them,<br />

including both sets <strong>of</strong> grandparents<br />

traveling all the way from Florida.<br />
