Your Child’s Attendance – Some Important Points to Remember
Please refer to the Smithdon Cluster Attendance Information leaflet regularly for information about how to
support your child’s attendance at school. If you require a further copy of this, please contact us.
By law, all children of compulsory school age (5 – 16) must receive a suitable full-time education.
Please try to avoid booking holidays during term time.
The Smithdon Cluster has agreed a policy to only authorise up to 5 days’ holiday during term time providing your
child has at least 92% attendance for the previous calendar year and the holiday does not clash with exams.
No holidays will be authorised for a student in Year 10 or 11.
Holidays will affect your child’s attendance. If your child is absent for 5 days for the purposes of a holiday and has
no other absences that year, their attendance will drop to 97%. If they are then unwell for 5 days throughout the
rest of the year their attendance will drop to 95%.
If your child’s attendance falls below 95% you may receive letters from their Head of Year expressing concerns
about their attendance. Children who miss school frequently can fall behind with their work and do less well in
exams.
If your child’s attendance falls below 90% you may be required to produce medical evidence to support illness. If
attendance continues to be a concern the school may use the Fast Track procedure which could result in legal
proceedings.
Please make every effort to ensure your child arrives at school on time. If your child will be late, please telephone
with a reason. If your child arrives after 9.00 am without a valid reason (eg overslept, missed the bus) then this
will be marked as an unauthorised late which is the same as an unauthorised absence and will affect their
percentage attendance.
Please keep in regular contact with your child’s Form Tutor and inform them of any issues which may affect your
child’s attendance eg homework issues, bullying, problems at home etc. These issues can then be dealt with
promptly to ensure your child’s continued happiness and success at Smithdon.
Thank you from the Round Table
I would like to thank the school on behalf of the
Hunstanton round table for the use of the Food
Tech room. A great night was had by all. Five
teams had an hour to prepare a main and
dessert course. Some weird and wonderful
dishes were served up.
Year 13’s
Thinking of going to University? Some information to help you along the way
For both parents and students, UCAS is a good place to start, their web address is http://www.ucas.ac.uk Is the
thought of fees and debt putting you off? See below for information on student loans put simply.

You need only contribute if you earn enough (£21,000) once you graduate.
Your contributions are taken like tax via the payroll.
No one will ever chase you for the cash – contributions are deducted before you receive your salary.
The more financially successful you are, the more you will contribute.
If you lose your job or your income is reduced, so are your contributions.
Contributions stop after thirty years, even if you haven’t contributed the maximum amount
Many people will be contributing for the whole 30 years – all of their working life.
Not taken into account on mortgage applications.
If you earn £22,000 in a year, what do you repay? The answer is £90, as twenty two thousand is £1000 above the
threshold and 9% of £1,000 is £90.
And if you earn £31,000, what do you repay? £900. Thirty one thousand is £10,000 above the threshold and 9% of
that is £900.
Thinking about going to University? Now is the time to start looking at which Universities you might like to attend.
All Universities hold open days which enable you to go along and talk to present students, look around the University
campus and accommodation. Well worth it. If you are unable to go to Open days or missed them, try You Tube or
the University websites to have a look at accommodation etc. A useful web site to use is www.opendays.com

Art Exhibition
Summer Concert 2012
On Tuesday 19th June 2012 Smithdon High
School opened its doors to show off the talents
of its Art students.
Students at Smithdon High School turned
exhibitors as they put on a show of the work
they have completed during their GCSE Art, AS
Fine Art and AS and A2 Photography courses.
Overall in excess of 60 students took part in the
exhibition, which covered a range of genres,
including sculptures, photography and mixed
media.
The exhibition was exceptionally well-attended,
with the whole school enjoying the displays, as
well as around 100 members of the public who
came to view the art works during the evening
from 6 to 7.30pm.
Ms Bazeley-Smith, the school’s Head of
Humanities A which encompasses the Art
Department, was pleased with how the
exhibition had gone, especially as it has not
taken place in the last few years. It was lovely to
see the exhibition back due to the hard work of
the students and staff.

Rotary Club Presentation 2012
At the Year 13 Final assembly on Friday 25 May Mr Bob
Wright presented the eighth annual Hunstanton and
District Rotary Club Centenary Award for Community
Service and Enterprise. All Sixth Formers were invited to
apply for the award with a prize of £250 for a project of
their choice. Initial written applications asked students to
give details of one piece of schoolwork as well as
community and enterprise work. The short listed
candidates were asked to give a ten-minute presentation
on their work to the awarding panel.
Winner, Katie Shanks, a member of year 13, had taken
part in a range of school based and community activities.
Last year, she was a member of the School Enterprise
team, Eco-Chic that made products from recycled
materials to sell at various events and sales. The profits
were donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. She has
regularly taken part in the local Race for Life and has
completed a sponsored walk to raise money for an
Alzheimer’s charity.
Katie, along with another member of year 13 Jamie Read,
has also recently taken part in a Lessons from Auschwitz
course courtesy of the Holocaust Educational Trust,
where she participated in a number of seminars and a
one day trip to the death camp, Auschwitz - Birkenau. She
returned from Poland as an ambassador for the trust and
has already, along with Jamie, started ambassadorial
duties. These include; giving a full school assembly,
appearing in the Lynn News and the EDP and sharing their
experiences on BBC Radio Norfolk. Katie’s intentions are
to carry on her ambassador work with an anti-prejudice
campaign here at Smithdon where she will be staying for
an extra year to support and continue her work.
The awarding panel decided unanimously that the award
should be presented to Katie. She showed enthusiasm
and commitment to the school and local community
projects.
Katie joins the seven previous winners of the award which
are recorded on a shield which was presented to the
school and is kept in school as a record of the winners of
this award.
Katie plans to spend the £250 she received along with this
award on several different things. As a Young Kennel Club
member she aims to attend dog training seminars in the
summer and a Career with Dogs Day in September;
money spent here will greatly assist her aspirations for
becoming an RSPCA inspector. The remaining money will
be put into savings to assist her career in the future.
Natural History Trip Year 7
On July 22 Year 7 took two coaches to the Natural
History Museum, organised by Mrs Charlton-Trewick
from the Science Department. It was a fantastic day;
most of the students decided the dinosaur display was
the best! They also loved the elevator going up
through the globe in the red zone.
Sixth Form End of term activity
The final day of term on Friday 20 July gave students
the opportunity to socialise. The day started with a
game of ten-pin bowling at Bowlers in Hunstanton
joined by Mr Chapman and Mr Edmonds. Later all
students returned to school for a barbecue in the
recently opened Sixth Form garden. There was plenty
of food cooked by Mr Edmonds. After the barbecue
students played football and rounders on the school
field. The day was a very pleasant end to the school
year and a nice start to the school holidays.

Olympics Trip
A group of 35 students enjoyed a once- in- a- lifetime trip to the London Olympics during the summer holidays. The
first stop was Wembley Stadium where the group saw the Mexico v Japan Men's Football Semi Final, which
resulted in a 3-1 win for Mexico.
After the game the group travelled to the University of Surrey for their overnight stay.
The next morning was an early 5am start to get to the Olympic Stadium to watch a morning of athletics, where we
saw Mo Farah in action as well as watching the Men's Decathlon events, women's 800 metres and the hammer.
The pupils all behaved fantastically well and were a credit to Smithdon High School.
Huge congratulations to everyone on their exam results, good luck with
