Objectives: To become proficient in examination of the cornea and ocular adnexa<br />
using the slit-lamp biomicroscope. Instruction in special techniques including:<br />
specular microscopy, corneal pachymetry, and corneal topography will be<br />
emphasized. The resident should be able to identify all major infectious,<br />
inflammatory, degenerative, hereditary, and congenital corneal disorders.<br />
Diagnosis and management of traumatic corneal disorders will also be<br />
emphasized.<br />
Various surgical techniques in cornea & external disease will be taught during the<br />
rotation, as well as basic techniques in refractive surgery.<br />
Resident schedule:<br />
Monday: ECMC clinic with Dr. Reidy all day beginning at 8:30 am<br />
immediately following grand rounds. Resident will examine and treat<br />
cornea and general ophthalmology patients. You will participate in the<br />
performance of minor surgical procedures such as cornea relaxing<br />
incisions and superficial keratectomies.<br />
Tuesday: Dr. Everett’s clinic at ECMC. Combination of Cornea and<br />
general patients beginning at 8 am.<br />
Wednesday: Millard Fillmore Ambulatory Surgery Center with Dr.<br />
Reidy all day beginning at 7:30 am. Refractive Surgery with Dr. Berardi<br />
one to two Thursdays per month in the afternoons. Alternating weeks<br />
with Dr. Schaeffer in OR at either Sisters Hospital or St. Joseph’s hospital.<br />
It is the residents responsibility to enquire regarding Dr. Schaeffer’s<br />
surgical schedule.<br />
Thursday: Dr. Reidy’s Sheridan Drive office. Corneal consultations all<br />
day beginning at 7:45 am.<br />
Friday: Dr. Reidy’s Sheridan Drive office. Corneal consultations all day<br />
beginning at 7:45 AM.<br />
