Dear Friends,
Bonjour, Namaste, Kem Chho?
Saying Goodbye…
Everything that has a beginning has an end and I see the end of my mission in Gujarat coming.
During my 1,460 days (approx.) as the Director of the Alliance Française in Ahmedabad and
its Branch in Baroda I believe that this Indo-French institution has accomplished a lot, for
itself but also for all our public, friends, members, students and partners.
Construction of our new premises I Concerto for sarod with Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, his 2
sons and the Symphonic Orchestra from Avignon I Establishment of the Heritage Section I
OZMA-DARPANA artistic project during 2 years and in 2 countries I Clarinet concert inside
the Durbar Hall of the Laxmi Vilas Palace in Baroda I Several visits of H. E. the Ambassador
of France to India and the Consul General of France I Photo exhibition in the old city of
Ahmedabad I Architecture projects over a period of 3 years with Xavier Wrona I Official
award to Shri B. V. Doshi by the French Govt. I Reinforcement of our relations with the
pedagogical institutions in Gujarat… This list is (almost) endless thanks to the support,
involvement and participation of all.
Though this editorial space does not permit an exhaustive list, I would like to ensure that
I thank here a few people. First, the Executive Committee of the Alliance, through its
President, Mr. Pavan Bakeri, who among many other things taught me to be willing to
take some risks. I have rarely met a person with so much energy and dedication about his
various commitments. In a nutshell, the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad would not stand
where it is now without his constant dedication and support. The staff, especially Raj Vakil,
Paresh Punjani, Chintan Pandya, our team of teachers and everyone who constantly
believed in what is the best for our students and members. Your professionalism, kindness
and energy are the reasons that we have seen our dreams becoming a reality. Of course,
nothing would have been possible without the constant support of our members and
partners, the Embassy of France in India and the Institut Français. Thank you all!
Whatever the future brings to YOUR Alliance Française, I will be watching and cheering for
you all. A big thank to all the people I have met during these 4 years, for what they have
taught me and what they have accepted to share with me and with the AF.

Saying Goodbye… but goodbyes are sad so I would rather say hello. Hello to the new
adventures and projects of AF, and there are many! Everybody will be needed on board to
write the future narrative of the Indo-French Cultural Center of Ahmedabad. I am going to
leave you more full of hope, than the day I arrived and more confident that the best days of
the AF in Gujarat are still to come.

At last the Reading Club is back! This time we have
a copious corpus to attack: la Renaissance! Not only will you get a chance to read
Ronsard, Rabelais, du Bellay, Montaigne and many others, but you’ll have to get
acquainted with the Great Discoveries, the religious wars all linked to the artistic
and intellectual effervescence that gave birth to these wonderful works… A time that
changed the world!
This course will be particularly profitable to the students who wish to appear for the
C1 exams, arts stream, but it’s also open to those who love literature, are curious
about a period that shaped what we are today, or just wish to read…
Workshop Grammar Revision Level A1 (Part 2) – 30 hours
From 16 July 2014 (20 sessions of 1 hour 30 minutes)

Do you adore French as a language? However, does the grammar become hindrance
on your way to explore the vast French culture? Voila, we are right here this time with
the solution to this problem albeit with our happy twist. We will make it more interesting
by bringing in class some of the French songs, funny but useful videos, the literary texts
and things alike. We will have this class keeping in mind few of the tenses, the articles,
the adjectives, the nouns, the pronouns, sentence formation, the modes like indicative,
imperative, introduction of subjunctive and of course we always wish to keep it a la
carte after all! So grab the opportunity as we are waiting for all of you in class!
Workshop Grammar Revision Level A2 – 30 hours
From 07 July 2014 (15 sessions of 2 hours)
Days: Every Monday and Friday

Level required: Level A2
The Grammar Workshop (Révisions niveau A2) continues. We’ll review the French
sentence structure, the place of adverbs and adjectives. As far as tenses and modes
are concerned, we’ll focus on the mode ‘indicatif’ (présent, passé composé, imparfait
et futur simple), but we’ll also approach the mode ‘subjonctif’ (only the present tense)
and ‘conditionnel ‘(present tense only). Further, we’ll attack clauses (restricting
ourselves to the ‘propositions relatives‘).

Kaleidoscope is back! This time, we’ll look at three different themes across the French
speaking world: fathers, teenagers and the genre « policier » using all sorts of documents:
poetry, stand-up acts, exerpts of novels, movie scenes, documentaries… Eclectic members
of Alliance Française, you’ll get a chance to read Chateaubriand and Victor Hugo, watch
some quirky Youtube video, some of the latest French films extracts…
So if you want to widen your acquaintance with the French culture, if you wish to work on
understanding unknown documents or if you are just looking for opportunities to express
yourself in French and do something different from the classwork, you are welcome!

recruiting agent shows him some
interest, Mitri believes his day has
come. But one has to pay to access
the great European clubs and so
does Mitri’s family, who got into debt
to support the young champion’s trip.
Once in Paris, the dream collapses.
The agent was a crook and Mitri is
left alone penniless in the unknown
city. So began Mitri’s French Odyssey,
made of encounters and gets going,
from Africans Community Centers in
the Paris suburbs to a cook training
in the East of France. But against all
odds, his dream of football will be
revived.

Haroun, starring Youssouf Djaoro and Diouc
Koma. It revolves around the current civil war
in Chad, and tells the story of a man who sends
his son to war in order to regain his position at an upscale hotel. Themes of fatherhood and
the culture of war are explored. Principal photography took place on location in N’Djamena
and Abéché. The film won the Jury Prize at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

global world-subcontracting. It is Europe on Moroccan land, on African land: close, tangible,
yet accessible only to those with a work permit. They become friends with two other girls
who work in the Free Zone and together explore every corner of this new space nonstop,
from dusk to dawn.

Vibrato
a regular musical meeting
We are very pleased to introduce a new regular gathering to explore, appreciate,
cherish and promote the Western Classical Music in Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad has
a very inclined culture for music. The city boasts of hosting Saptak – the biggest
Indian Classical Music Festival as well as regular concerts and gigs at various
venues. Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad wishes to contribute to this cultural
legacy by organising regular musical meetings on Western Classical Music.
We are confident that Vibrato will provide a platform for young artists to portray
their musical talent. At the same time, all Amdavadis will taste the new flavour of
music that is little explored hitherto. Vibrato will be organised at regular intervals,
throughout the year.
These concerts may be restricted to invitees only.
(Members will be our priority – another good reason to become a Member of
Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad!)

Pathik Maniyar (16), an Ahmedabad resident, studies
in 11th standard in Hiramani School. Having already
passed Grade 7 in Piano performance and Grade 6 in
Theory of Music from London College of Music,he will
be appearing for Grade 8 in Piano Performance from
Trinity College of Music later this year. Apart from
Piano, he is also well-versed in playing the Violin, in
which he has cleared Grade 5. He has performed at
various prestigious venues and has performed at over
50 concerts with Vibration Academy of Music. He plays
various genres of music ranging from Western Classical to
Contemporary to Gujarati songs.
Apart from performing, he is also well-versed with various music production
softwares. He is an arranger and an engraver, writing music for various players
performing at the concerts.He works at the studio set up at Vibration Academy of
Music, creating music for various professional projects for the institute itself.
Tavan Shah (16) is the son of creative parents, architect
Minesh Shah & architect Krishna Shah from vadodara.
He is passionate about western classical music. He
started learning Indian classical music at the age of
5 years and presently he is in the sixth year under
his guru Mrs. Ramilaben Ichchapuria. He started
learning guitar at the age of 10 years. From which his
interest towards western classical music developed.
He started learning piano at 13 years of age and
florished his skills under the guidance of Shri Saurin
Upadyay. He directly appeared for grade 7 and grade 8 from
the London College of Music and passed with distinctions.He dreams of becoming
a concert pianist.
His favorite composers are Chopin, Liszt, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert,
Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Bach etc. In the month of July, 2013 he had
visited cyprus and turkey for international music festival, where he played Turkish
March in front of the president of Cyprus, and got special appreciation and was
awarded a medal. Tavan would like to thank vibration academy of music to give him
an opportunity to perform on this platform.

Momentarily! Some news we can’t digest but thankfully our supercomputer with
blood, sweat and tears store all the memories in a strange manner… frame by
frame. This time is payback time for me, that is why I decided to dance for three
days, my mind will travel to and fro, my brush will puke bloodline ink and Philippe
Martin, let me tell you the truth… through the live dancing of lines, colours, splash
an splatters in your shine on brightly gallery floor, wall, windows and doors with
the itch I live with. I will drain my mind, I will soak the paper,
I will sing the song… Drinking Muddy Waters with brush, ink,
charcoal, pen, pencil, knife, revolver and perhaps with a
blunt chisel. My mind camera will click random the tales
of Jaques-Rémy Girerd and the raining frogs, Hadouk Trio
magical flutes, On les aura by Barroux & Julien, Rabbi’s Cat for
Chitrakatha, Lacroix’s Insektors, Eryck’s Alang noise, Marine
submarines graphic novels, comics, cartoons, music, food,
struggles, tears, laughter and many more...”

Sekhar Mukherjee is a senior faculty at NID’s Animation Department, In-charge
of International Relations and director of “Chitrakatha” – International Students’
Animation Film Festival. He traveled to France between June 6 and 22, 2014,
to attend the International Animation Festival in Annecy, to discover the Cité
internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image, to meet friends and to sketch...
It won’t surprise us if this performance cum exhibition will incorporate some French
elements!

Year after year, Fanatika family grows bigger and explores new audiences in and
outside Ahmedabad. The city-based theatre troupe has been international in its
approach of teaching theatre through Indo-Western methods as well as through
various international workshops with French, American and Swiss artists.
Fanatika offers Regular, Theme-based and International Workshops to impart

The Founder-President of Fanatika,
Mr. Chintan Pandya started traveling
abroad to conduct workshops on
theatre and related subjects. In 2013,
he was invited to France, Luxembourg
and Portugal to conduct various
theme-based workshops. He attended
Festival d’Avignon that is the biggest
Theatre Festival of the world.
This year, Mr. Pandya is invited as
the resident artist at the International
Theatre Laboratory in Italy. This
laboratory is organised by Theatro
Potlach. During the residency, Chintan
Pandya will also make a presentation
on Bhavai at this residency. After
the residency in Italy, he will go to
Montpellier, France where he will
conduct a workshop on Exploring
India through its Dramatic Texts. He
will also attend the Festival d’Avignon
again this year.

by Jaywardhan.
Raunaq Kamdar is directing this
play and, under his tutelage,
this will be Fanatika’s first Hindi
production.
Synopsis of the play:
This play is a hilarious satire on
the hollow organisational skills of
Government bodies and on the
theatre scene patronised by hypocrite
and elitist kinds of the society. The
“Urgent Meeting” seems to be losing
the element of being “urgent” and
is incessantly being interrupted by
unwanted discussions.

We are pleased to announce that recently we enhanced our collection of
‘Learner’s Library’ with many new books encouraging our students to learn French.
The collection includes simplified novels, story books accompanied with CDs,
informative books and much more.
It is a great privilege when you get to explore the French literature in our very own
local languages: Hindi and Gujarati. The AF Library is glad to introduce to you few
classic French novels and plays that have been translated in Hindi and Gujarati.

second edition of the video gaming evening. Our wifi networks and computers at A.F.

voice of silence, a title that she gained because of her
style of writing. We shall dedicate this evening to her
by reading our loud a few extracts of ‘India Song’, a
play not only written but also adapted beautifully into
a film by Duras. 4 invisible voices narrate this story
of paralyzed love at the peak of passion that takes
place in India of 1930s along the banks of Ganga. This evening shall give you an
opportunity to discover one of the masterpieces of Duras.

GROWING NUMBER OF INDIAN STUDENTS NOW HEADING TO FRANCE
Last year, 3,000 students went to France for higher education in France. As much as 75%
are in the field of management and other 30% engineering, design, architecture etc. India’s
increased interest in French institutions can also be traced to the cost factor. In France, even
private institutions are heavily subsidized. And the embassy offers a range of scholarships. On
average, tuition fees amount to about Rs 10 lakh per annum.

IIM-A 4TH IN THE ECONOMIST’S GOOD-VALUE B-SCHOOLS
The Economist has ranked India’s premier B school, Indian Institute of Management
Ahmedabad, fourth among 20 leading schools globally in terms of return on investment for
its students.In its latest issue dated May 10, the newspaper ranks HEC Paris as the B school
which offers the best returns of 67 per cent after one year, post an MBA. There are more than
30 students going for an exchange program every year from IIM-A to France.

Changes in visa rules last year have also made France more attractive. “Visa regulations now
allow students will get 1 year stay back visa to find out to work in same field after completing
the programme. If you hold a Master’s, PhD or PG degree from a French institution, get a 5

L’oeil de L’astronome

Synopsis: Summer 1610. One of the first telescope invented
by Galileo finally arrives in Prague, the capital of the German
Empire. For ten nights, Johannes Kepler, astronomer Rudolf
II can finally explore the sky using the new invention and see
that nobody has ever seen. The terrace where Kepler moved his
observatory becomes the place where the imperial court makes
an appointment. Night after night, people come to the show as
looking through the telescope, watch the dissection of a human eye, plotting against the
emperor. At the heart of this agitation, Johannes Kepler, unclassifiable and tireless, traces its
singular path between science and superstition, intolerance and freedom...
Quand l’Europe parlait français

Synopsis: The film tells the story of the French language in
the eighteenth century, the reign of Louis XIV on the eve of the
French Revolution, trying to decipher the springs its hegemony
in Europe at that time. The film project is to question what
makes a legend language: French has he been hegemonic as
could be before him Italian or Spanish, and English after? Or
is it that language embodies the values that exist today and
that would be attached to him by nature? To bring this question,
the film is based on two characters: one, Voltaire embodies
better than anyone his age and its values; another Fumaroli
Marc brings his historian of French essayist and scholar on the
hegemony of French and concrete during the eighteenth century events look: correspondence
and diplomacy, literature and art conversation, decorative arts and life lounges. The one and
the other, but in two opposite perspectives, guide us in the chronology of a abounding century.
The film takes us to meet the European elites who adopted French as their lifestyle. Experts
from the eighteenth century (antique historians, restorers, museum curators) to bring their
own table a key time.
