and academic growth. The library provides a scholarly research and learning
environment that not only supports the curriculum, but also prepares students
for their future education. The Librarians provide continuous research and
database instruction to students throughout their four years at SLUH. The
library also provides a computer lab for student use and offers extended hours
for students before and after school. All school rules apply in the library and
students are expected to be courteous and respectful to faculty, staff, and other
students when using the library.
R. Standardized Testing Program at St. Louis U. High School
Standardized testing for academic achievement and intellectual ability is an
integral part of the St. Louis University High School guidance program. At
each grade level students are tested to assess achievement and ability as
compared to national norms and also indicate the student's relative academic
strengths and areas for improvement. These tests help the counselors to
monitor student progress over their four years at SLUH.
Incoming freshmen take the STS High School Placement Test, which yields
both verbal and quantitative ability scores and achievement scores in the areas
of reading, math, and language. Results of this test are used in freshman
counseling sessions which address the student's performance in his course
work early in freshman year as it compares to his STS scores. Freshmen also
take the Learning Style Inventory, an instrument which helps them to
understand how they learn and study best. Counseling sessions will follow the
administration of the LSI to assist students in developing appropriate
homework plans.
During the sophomore year students will take the PSAT (Preliminary
Scholastic Aptitude Test) and the PLAN Test. Besides affording students the
opportunity to experience two practice college admissions tests, the PSAT is an
early indicator of ability and the PLAN shows how the student is achieving in
the areas of writing skills, mathematics, reading and science reasoning. In
addition, the PLAN includes a career interest survey and a study-skills selfassessment
which are used to initiate career exploration activities and to assist
students in learning to study more effectively.
In the fall semester of Junior year a second administration of the PSAT serves
as a practice test for the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and as a qualifying test
for a National Merit Scholarship competition.
Juniors are strongly encouraged to take both the SAT and the ACT (American
College Test) in the Spring semester. These are standardized college
admissions tests which may be taken more than once. Together with the
student's official high school transcript, these admissions tests serve as an
indicator of the student's ability to do college level work. One of the two
admissions tests (SAT or ACT) will be required by a college for admissions.
