Our
President
Mr.
Laughlin
was
not
President

<strong>for</strong>
he
was
only
4
<br />

Our
Princiapal
Dr.
Moran
was
not
principal
<strong>for</strong>
he
was
1
‐‐‐‐
excuse
me
one
and

a
<br />

half
<br />

<br />

And
into
that
group
of
whos
who
in
SLUH
folklore
steps
in
a
diminutivebespectacled
Chemistry
Teacher
named
<strong>Charlie</strong>
<strong>Busenhart</strong>.
<br />

<br />

In
1971
besides
his
teaching
duties
he
was
talked
into
starting
a
Hockey
program
<br />

with
fellow
faculty
members

<strong>Charlie</strong>
Amelotti
and
Dr.
Jim
Murphy
<br />

<br />

After
the
first
year
he
was
head
coach
<strong>for</strong>
next
41
years‐‐‐he
learned
the
game
<br />

through
watching
videos,
going
to
clinics
and
watching
the
Blues.‐‐‐‐‐
<br />

<br />

In
the
early
70’s
the
players
did
not
wear
face
masks
with
their
helmets
but
a
<br />

outside
mouthpiece.

High
School
hockey
goalies
wore
masks
that
were
like
the
<br />

Jason
masks
in
Friday
the
13 th
movies.
<br />

<br />

In
those
early
years
the
team
was
chosen
solely
on
aggressiveness
and
size
the
best
<br />

players
were
Freshman
and
Soph
who
had
already
played
organized
hockey.
<br />

<br />

Early
SLUH
hockey
in
the
70’s
practices
were
at
the
outside
Webster
rink
at
6:30
in
<br />

the
morning
or
at
Steinberg
rink
in
Forest
Park‐‐‐a
practice
routine
daily
was
<br />

sweeping
the
ice
and
removing
leaves,
branches
and
other
debris
that
had
<br />

accumulated
overnight
.

Immerfrost
rink
on
Kingshighway
past
Gateway
High
<br />

School
was
our
home
rink
<strong>for</strong>
three
years.
<br />

<br />

Over
the
years
interest
in
SLUH
hockey
grew‐‐‐‐it
became
the
place
to
be

on
Friday
<br />

or
Saturday
night

at
places
like
Affton,
Queeny
Park
or
the
Hardees
Ice
Complex.
<br />

<br />

In
the
last
5
years
the
hockey
Bills
have
been

to
the
state
semi‐finals
3
times
and
<br />

state
final
2
times.
<br />

<br />

Coach
B’s
Overall
record
is
523
wins‐‐‐438
loses
and
98
ties
he
is
one
of
the
<br />

winningest
coaches
in
Mid
States
Hockey
<br />

<br />

Coach
B
has
served
the
hockey
community
as
a
member
of
the
Mid
States
League
<br />

rules
committee
and
scheduling
chairperson.
<br />

<br />

In
2008
Coach
<strong>Busenhart</strong>
was
elected
as
a
Charter
member
of
the
Missouri
Amateur
<br />

Hockey
Hall
of
Fame
.
<br />

<br />

I
would
also
be
remiss
not
to
mention
<strong>Charlie</strong>’s
wife
Sally‐‐‐who
<strong>for</strong>
years
sold
<br />

tickets,
did
crowd
control,
washed,
sewed,
cleaned
and
stored
uni<strong>for</strong>ms.
And
was
a
<br />

mom
and
cheerleader
to
many
of
our
players‐‐‐‐Thank
you
Sally.
