Dr. Moran approached me a couple of weeks back and asked me to bring some
closure for the student body, faculty and friends on the retirement of Charlie
Busenhart as SLUH hockey coach.

I am excited and pumped and fired up to do this‐‐‐‐because Charlie deserves a
tremendous amount of recognition not only for his years of teaching at SLUH but
also his years of coaching. He is a valued friend and colleague and teacher to all of
us.
Our President Mr. Laughlin was not President for he was only 4
Our Princiapal Dr. Moran was not principal for he was 1 ‐‐‐‐ excuse me one and a
half

And into that group of whos who in SLUH folklore steps in a diminutivebespectacled Chemistry Teacher named Charlie Busenhart.

In 1971 besides his teaching duties he was talked into starting a Hockey program
with fellow faculty members Charlie Amelotti and Dr. Jim Murphy

After the first year he was head coach for next 41 years‐‐‐he learned the game
through watching videos, going to clinics and watching the Blues.‐‐‐‐‐

In the early 70’s the players did not wear face masks with their helmets but a
outside mouthpiece. High School hockey goalies wore masks that were like the
Jason masks in Friday the 13 th movies.

In those early years the team was chosen solely on aggressiveness and size the best
players were Freshman and Soph who had already played organized hockey.

Early SLUH hockey in the 70’s practices were at the outside Webster rink at 6:30 in
the morning or at Steinberg rink in Forest Park‐‐‐a practice routine daily was
sweeping the ice and removing leaves, branches and other debris that had
accumulated overnight . Immerfrost rink on Kingshighway past Gateway High
School was our home rink for three years.

Over the years interest in SLUH hockey grew‐‐‐‐it became the place to be on Friday
or Saturday night at places like Affton, Queeny Park or the Hardees Ice Complex.

In the last 5 years the hockey Bills have been to the state semi‐finals 3 times and
state final 2 times.

Coach B’s Overall record is 523 wins‐‐‐438 loses and 98 ties he is one of the
winningest coaches in Mid States Hockey

Coach B has served the hockey community as a member of the Mid States League
rules committee and scheduling chairperson.

In 2008 Coach Busenhart was elected as a Charter member of the Missouri Amateur
Hockey Hall of Fame .

I would also be remiss not to mention Charlie’s wife Sally‐‐‐who for years sold
tickets, did crowd control, washed, sewed, cleaned and stored uniforms. And was a
mom and cheerleader to many of our players‐‐‐‐Thank you Sally.
Probably outside of Fr. Hagan coaching the rifle team no one has coached one
particular sport longer than Coach Busenhart in hockey for 41 years.

Coach Busenhart’s Coaching Philosophy is the template of the SLUH coaching
philosophy‐‐‐He summarizes it in this way‐‐‐‐The best coaching experience is not
just winning but working with young men helping to make their experience at SLUH
one that is filled with good memories. Hopefully conveying to our young man a love
for the game of hockey, ability to work as a team, sportsmanship in losing as well as
winning and dedication to the values taught at St. Louis U. High.

The terms Curia Personalis and Man for Others are tossed around like I Love You’s
at a High School Prom. The man we are honoring this morning not only talks the talk
but walks the walk .In his 44 years of teaching here at St. Louis U. High he has been
involved in the hockey program for 44 years ‐‐‐‐ 43 years as the head coach.

Many also do not know that Mr. Busenhart breathed new life into a teetering water
polo program and coached the team to prominence for 33 years ‐‐‐‐‐‐during that
time the Water polo team won 9 state championships‐‐‐the current coaches Mr.
Baudendistel and Mr. Penilla. Coach B‐‐‐‐taught them‐‐‐‐coached them—and shaped
them from teenagers to young men to coaches to teachers to becoming good
fathers.

In his 44 years he has coached and taught at SLUH he has coached approx. 780
water polo players 1,320 SLUH hockey players and taught approx 4, 458 Jr. Bills
here at SLUH.

Hey Charlie ‐‐‐‐ we love you.

It is with genuine love, and admiration I urge you to make some noise in
appreciation to one of our most beloved coaches and faculty members
Mr. B‐‐‐‐‐Charlie Busenhart.
