Tree to 20 m tall;younger parts stellately f pubescent; leaves<br />
elliptic, 10-20 cm x 2.5-9 cm; petiole to 4 cm; inflorescence<br />
a stiff panicle to 22 cm broad; calyx tube 4.5 mm long, lobes<br />
0.5 mm, 10-veined, pubescent; corolla white, 1.1 cm, lobes 0.6<br />
cm; fruit fusiform, included in persistent calyx and corolla.<br />
Neotropics; rare in <strong>Dominica</strong> in dry coastal woodlandx<br />
Coulibisai (Whitefoord 5359), Scotts Head (Hodge 1627), sine<br />
loc. (Imray s.n.).<br />
Cordia sebestana Linnaeus, a similar species but more<br />
pubescent and with large red flowers, was reported from<br />
<strong>Dominica</strong> by Beard (1944:64), possibly from cultivation.<br />

Tree to 6 m; leaves obovate, apiculate, usually tapering at<br />
base, glabrous, to 12 cm x 6 cm; petioles 1 cm; leaf scars<br />
prominent on 1 year twigs; inflorescence cymose; flowers<br />
white, fragrant; calyx splitting irregularly; corolla tube 3 mm,<br />
petals 3 mm, reflexed, stamens conspicuously exserted, fruit a<br />
fleshy red berry, 1 cm across.<br />
Neotropics; near sea level in <strong>Dominica</strong> on west coast:<br />
Cabrits (Nicolson 4193), Morne Daniel (Hodge 3890), Pointe<br />
Ronde (Hodge 2735), Salisbury (Ernst 1423). Fruits May-<br />
June.<br />

Densely branching shrub to 2 m; leaves rugose, oblongovate,<br />
rounded at apex, tapering at base, epetiolate, to 5 cm x<br />
1.5 cm, margins crenate; inflorescence a terminal spike, to 8 cm<br />
long; corolla tube 4 mm, lobes 1.5 mm; fruit a red berry.<br />
Northern South America, Martinique; a fairly common shrub<br />
in <strong>Dominica</strong> in dry areas below 500 m on west side: Batali<br />
River (Webster 13171), Colihaut (Ernst 1137, Wilbur 8225),<br />
Dublanc (Whirefoord 4278). Grand Savanne (Hodge 3808,<br />
Lloyd 839, Nicolson 40S1, Stehle 6317, Wilbur 7631), South<br />
Chiltern (Stern & Wasshausen 2534).<br />
Cordia curassavica Roemer & Schultes sensu strict0 seems<br />
not to occur in <strong>Dominica</strong>. Reports <strong>of</strong> its occurrence are based<br />
on a wider interpretation <strong>of</strong> the species that includes C.<br />
divaricata (see Johnston, 1949b:99- 102). Cordia curassavica<br />
is distinguished from C. divaricata in having larger (1 1 cm x 3<br />
cm), elliptic, dentate, short-petiolate leaves. Cordia curassavica<br />
may also have been confused with C. martinicensis or C.<br />
nesophila.<br />

Sprawling shrub to 2 m; leaves elliptic, base cuneate, upper<br />
2/3 <strong>of</strong> margins coarsely serrate, 3-8 cm x 1.5-4 cm; twigs,<br />
leaves and calyx strigose; inflorescence terminal, globose, 2 cm<br />
broad; calyx lobes setaceous, 3 mm; corolla tube 4 mm, lobes<br />
2 mm, white; berry ovate, red, 5 mm long.<br />
Northern South America, Lesser Antilles; occasional in<br />
<strong>Dominica</strong>, roadside thickets on west coast: Cabrits (Hodge 890,<br />
Nicolson 1195, Smith 10337), Colihaut (Kimber 1060),<br />
Dublanc (Whirefoord 4276), Grand Savanne (Wilbur 7656,<br />
Stehlt 6396), Loubiere (Hodge 3861), Pointe Ronde (Hodge<br />
2769), Rosehill (Eggers 878), Salisbury (Ernst 1753), Scotts<br />
Head (Wilbur 8135), St. Joseph (Nicolson 4043, sine loc.<br />
(Eggers 818, Imray s.n.).<br />

Shrub to 2 m; leaves slightly scabrous, ovate, apex<br />
acute-attenuate, base rounded to acute, 6-20 cm x 3-8 cm,<br />
margin coarsely toothed; inflorescence a stout terminal spike,<br />
densely flowered; calyx inflated, lobes with subulate tips;<br />
corolla tube 6 mm long, lobes 1 mm; fruit a drupe, included in<br />
calyx.<br />
Lesser Antilles; occasional in <strong>Dominica</strong> on west coast below<br />
300 m: Colihaut-Pointe Ronde-Milton Estate (Ernst 2063,<br />
Hodge 2543,2663, Lloyd 853, Whitefoord 4682).<br />

Slender shrub to 3 m; leaves scabrous above, pubescent<br />
beneath, ovate-lanceolate, apex acute, base rounded to acute,<br />
6-15 cm x 1.5-6 cm, margins crenate; inflorescence a terminal<br />
corymbiform cyme to 7 cm across; flowers & sessile; calyx with<br />
10 veins visible; corolla tube 4 mm, lobes 2 mm, reflexed;<br />
hits frequently parasitized, 5 mm across.<br />
Lesser Antilles; infrequent in <strong>Dominica</strong>, dry western coastal<br />
slopes: Colihaut (Wilbur 8238, 8279), Dublanc (Whirefoord<br />
4277).
