52 BI~NONIACEAE-BOMBACACEAE SMlTHSONIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO BOTANY<br />
obtuse, 12 cm x 7 cm, petioles to 9 cm, petiolules to 3 cm;<br />
pedicel 1 cm; calyx to 1.5 cm, truncate; corolla to 16 cm long,<br />
white, lobes to 2 cm, rounded, fruit cylindric, 12 cm x 4 cm;<br />
seeds flattened, woody, 2 cm x 3 cm.<br />
Lesser Antilles and Venezuela; locally abundant along the<br />
west coast <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong> (type locality): Canefield Estate (Ernst<br />
1838), Massacre (Webster 13476). Flowering June, flowers and<br />
hits in July.<br />
This species differs from T jurobu Swartz only in its<br />
puberulous leaf undersurface and may fall into synonymy<br />
(Gentry, pers. comm.).<br />
Tecoma Jussieu<br />
Tecoma cupensis (Thunberg) Lindley (includes Tecomriu<br />
cupensis phunberg) Spach), cape honeysuckle, a rambling<br />
shrub with scarlet flowers to 2 cm long (Hodge 1007, sterile).<br />

Shrub to 4 m; leaves 5-7-pinnate; leaflets sessile, ovatelanceolate,<br />
margins crenate; pedicel 7 mm; calyx 5 mm, lobes<br />
acute, 1 mm; corolla campanulate, yellow, to 4.5 cm, rounded<br />
lobes to 1 cm; fruit terete, to 20 cm x 0.5 cm; seeds 0.5 cm,<br />
membranous wings 1.5 cm.<br />
Neotropics; infrequent to common along dry west coast:<br />
Batali River (Erst 1412), Colihaut (Hodge 3773, Loubiere<br />
(Hodge 3862), Pointe Guignard (Wilbur 8132), Scotts Head<br />
(Wilbur 7592), South Chiltern (Hodge 1629), Tarou Cliffs<br />
(Nicolson 1859). Flowers and hits in March, May, June, and<br />
October.<br />

Neotropics, pantropically naturalizing; in <strong>Dominica</strong> cultivated<br />
and apparently spontaneous at lower and middle<br />
elevations on east coast: Cote d'Or (Nicolson 2054), Lisdara<br />
(Hodge 2478), Lmdonderry (Chambers 2624), Salybia (Hodge<br />
3303,3225).<br />
The red seed coat is used as a dye (Hodge and Taylor,<br />
1957588).<br />
BOMBACACEAE<br />

Durio zibethinus Murray, the famous durian <strong>of</strong> Southeast<br />
Asia, was collected in the Roseau Botanical Garden (Hodge<br />
941). It has a large, spiny, overwhelmingly fragrant fruit.<br />

Pantropical, in <strong>Dominica</strong> in dry west coast woodlands:<br />

Chiltern (Hodge 1649). Leafless March-May, hits ripe in<br />

Nicolson 4128), Calibishie-Portsmouth-Spanish Mountain<br />
(Nicolson!). Flowers in January, hits in April-June.<br />
