Annual herbs; leaves alternate, entire, elliptic to oblong, thin,<br />
to 6 cm x 2.5 cm on thin petioles; heads solitary, on long<br />
peduncles that are swollen towards apex; involucral bracts 5, in<br />
a single series, linear, -2 cm long; receptacle naked, small;<br />
florets green, purple-tinged at tip, all tubular, bisexual, with a<br />
thin, elongate tube and a short limb; achenes dark, linear, to 1<br />
cm long, with conspicuous light tan pappus <strong>of</strong> capillary<br />
bristles.<br />
Weed from southern US to Argentina; rarely collected on<br />
<strong>Dominica</strong>: Baiac (Whitefoord 5465) Eggers collection reported<br />
by Urban (1899, 1:467) and Imray and Domin<br />
collections reported by Domin (193Ock80)].<br />

Erect perennial herb to 1 m; leaves alternate, lower<br />
oblanceolate, upper smaller and linear; glomerules 1-4-headed<br />
with 2-4 florets per head; achenes 10-ribbed, pappus with<br />
longer bristly hairs double-bent.<br />
Neoaopical weed now pantropical; common on <strong>Dominica</strong> in<br />
disturbed places: Clarke Hall (Chambers 2633, Fort Shirley <strong>of</strong><br />
West Cabrit (Whitefoord 3978), Grand Bay road (Ernst 1593,<br />
Mt. Joy (Hodge 1277), South Chiltern (Hodge 1532). Trafalgar<br />
Falls road (Hodge 2014, Whitefoord 4581).<br />

Virgate, stiff perennial herb; leaves alternate, entire, ellipticlanceolate,<br />
dark green above, white-tomentose beneath; inflorescence<br />
compounded <strong>of</strong> 1-flowered heads that are glomerate<br />
in sessile clusters subtended by a leaf; involucre <strong>of</strong> 2 bracts,<br />
outer larger than inner and aristate; florets all tubular,<br />
3-4-toothed; achenes angled, truncate, crowned with a lacerate<br />
pappus, shed in the 2 clasping involucral bracts.<br />
Northern South America to Honduras and Puerto Rico;<br />
occasional in <strong>Dominica</strong> in moist, disturbed areas: Carib<br />
Reserve (Hodge 3278), Clarke Hall (Chambers 2750), La<br />
Chaudi6re (Hodge 3628), Layou River Valley (Ernst 1508),<br />
Lisdara (Hodge 2422), Morne Plaisance (Whitefoord 4508),<br />
near Newhall [?I (Eggers 516), Providence Valley (Hodge<br />
2039), Riversdale (Proctor 25792), South Chiltern (Hodge<br />
1483).<br />
Root infusion used by Caribs for medicine (Hodge and<br />
Taylor, 1957:616), Adjanohoun et al. (198589, pl. 56) reported<br />
use <strong>of</strong> leaf infusion.<br />

Large herbaceous shrub to 3 m, <strong>of</strong>ten reclining on other<br />
vegetation, stems strongly ridged, leaves alternate, fleshy,<br />
elliptic to lanceolate, denticulate; inflorescence much<br />
branched, terminal; involucre 1-seriate; receptacle flat, naked,<br />
florets yellow to orange, marginal florets ligulate, female and<br />
disk florets bisexual and tubular; achenes elongate, pappus <strong>of</strong><br />
many silky bristles.<br />
Guadeloupe to Martinique; at higher elevations <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong>,<br />
reported as common around Freshwater Lake: Freshwater Lake<br />
area (Chambers 2552, Eggers 680, Ernst 1103, Hodge 1871,<br />
King 6379, Smith 10244, Whitefoord 4179, 5152), Mome<br />
Anglais (Fennah 23), Valley <strong>of</strong> Desolation (Hodge 1943).<br />
A Trinidad record is probably a Sieber labeling error, as<br />
noted by Stehle (1%3:189).<br />

Sow-thistle.<br />
Stout, hollow-stemmed annual herbs to 1 m, sap milky;<br />
leaves alternate, lower lyrate-pinnatifid with a broad terminal<br />
lobe, acutely dentate, upper auriculateclasping; involucral<br />
bracts in several series, outer smallest; receptacle flat, naked;<br />
florets pale yellow, all ligulate and 5-toothed, achenes<br />
flattened, rugulose and grooved, with pappus <strong>of</strong> capillary hairs.<br />
Cosmopolitan weed, especially in temperate regions; new<br />
record for <strong>Dominica</strong>: En Haut Jean (Whitefoord5423), north <strong>of</strong><br />
Grand Savanne (Wilbur 8118), Tee Morne (King 6325).<br />
