Pubescent twining vine; leaves ovate, cordate-hastate at<br />

base; petioles winged; corolla 2-4 cm long, yellow or orange,<br />

usually with a dark purple eye.<br />

East Africa but now pantropically introduced and escaping;<br />

common in <strong>Dominica</strong> along roadsides: Baiac (Whitefoord<br />

3831), Glasham (Nicolson 2090), Hatton Garden (Hodge<br />

2952), Laudat (Gillis 8189), Lisdara (Hodge 845), Pichelin<br />

(Ernst 1618,1962), Ridgefield (Hodge 2131), Roseau (Cooper<br />

135), Soufriere (Lloyd 478), South Chiltem (Stern & Wasshausen<br />

2512), Springfield (Wasshausen & Ayensu 309, Sylvania<br />

(Hodge 844), sine loc. (ad vias et in fruticetis Eggers 594 at<br />

GH).<br />

Ed. Note: It is evident that Sims provided the validating<br />

description and accepted the name T alata Bojer that<br />

accompanied the seeds, hence the name should be attributed to<br />

Bojer ex Sims or simply to Sims, the publishing author, not to<br />

Bojer.<br />

2:180.<br />

Finely pubescent vine; leaves ovate-lanceolate, hastate or<br />

cordate at base, entire or remotely few-toothed toward base;<br />

flowers axillary; bracts ovate-lanceolate; corolla white, 2-3 cm<br />

long, lobes crenate, k equaling the tube; capsule depressedglobose,<br />

tipped by a stout subulate beak.<br />

Tropical Asia but now widely cultivated and escaping;<br />

occasional in <strong>Dominica</strong>: Soufriere Village (Hodge 1626<br />

“common on stone walls,” Lloyd 484), loc.? (Eggers 2926,<br />

teste Lindau).<br />

Thunbergia grandifora<br />

Thunbergia grondifloro Roxburgh [1814:45, nom. nud.; Loddiges, 1820 [Jan],<br />

nom. nud.. tab. sine analysis] in Ker, 1820 [Nov].-Roxburgh, 1832,3:34.<br />

Flcmingio grandiflor0 Roxburgh ex Rottler. 1803:202.<br />

Large vine; leaves ovate to broad-ovate, cordate to hastate at<br />

base, <strong>of</strong>ten coarsely toothed or lobed below middle; corolla<br />

white or light blue, campanulate, to 8 cm x 5 cm.<br />

India but widely cultivated and escaping; occasional in<br />

<strong>Dominica</strong>: Mome Cola Anglais (Webster 13412), Springfield<br />

(Skog 1550).<br />

Ed. Note: The nomenclature is still under consideration.<br />

Recent authors attribute the combination to (Roxburgh ex<br />

Rottler) Roxburgh or (Roxburgh ex Rottler) Roxburgh ex<br />

Loddiges.<br />

Thunbergia laurifolia<br />

Thunbergio lourifolio Lindley. 1856.-W. Hacker, 1857.<br />

Woody liana; leaves lanceolate to oblong-ovate, longacuminate,<br />

truncate at base, glabrous, entire or sometimes<br />

obscurely repand and dentate; corolla pale blue or blue with<br />

whitish or yellow throat, campanulate, 5-6 cm x 4-6 cm.<br />

Malaysia, introduced and escaping elsewhere; recently<br />

collected in <strong>Dominica</strong>: above Laudat on road to Freshwater<br />

Lake (Erst 1751).<br />

AIZOACEAE<br />

Sesuvium portulacastrum<br />

Sesuvim portidocostrwn (Linnaeus) Linnaeus, 1759a:1058.-Howard, 1988,<br />

4:198.<br />

Portuhco portdocostrum Linnaeus, 175346.<br />

Howard (1.c.) reported this from <strong>Dominica</strong> with an exclamation<br />

mark (!), meaning that he has seen material. I have not.<br />

Trianthema portulacastrum Linnaeus was cited for <strong>Dominica</strong><br />

by Vtlez (1957:72) but his material has not been seen.<br />

AMARANTHACEAE<br />

Gomphrena keys to Alternanthera but has a branched<br />

stigma. Velez (1957:73) attributed introduced Gomphrena<br />

globosa Linnaeus to <strong>Dominica</strong>.<br />

Lithophila muscoides Swartz, with basal leaves and two<br />

stamens, was attributed to <strong>Dominica</strong> by Velez (1957:74).<br />

Philoxerus verm’cularis (Linnaeus) Smith, a fleshy herb <strong>of</strong><br />

saline soils, was attributed to <strong>Dominica</strong> by Velez (1957:74).<br />

The current name is Blutaparon vermiculare (Linnaeus) Mears.<br />
