An erect, hispid herb to 1 m; leaves coarsely toothed,<br />

broadest at base; flowers k sessile; calyx lobes broad; corolla<br />

yellow.<br />

Neotropics; a roadside weed in interior <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong>: Baiac<br />

(Whitefoord 5463), between Pont Casse and Deux Branches<br />

(Ernst 1665, Nicolson 2130), Freshwater Lake (Eggers 601),<br />

Ridgefield (Hodge 2164, Syndicate (Whitefoord 4460,5868),<br />

sine loc. (Eggers 985).<br />

Neotropics, now pantropical; reported for <strong>Dominica</strong> by<br />

Vdlez (1957:113) based on his own recognizance. The species<br />

is expected, although not yet confirmed, on <strong>Dominica</strong>.<br />

Erect herb (drying black); leaves hispid, linear-lanceolate,<br />

3-veined; flowers in a loose, terminal spike; calyx pubescent,<br />

shorter than capsule.<br />

Southeastern U.S. to Jamaica, scattered in Central America<br />

and West Indies; new record for <strong>Dominica</strong>: “rainforest area<br />

about 2 miles [3 km] south <strong>of</strong> Pagua Bay” (Long & Norstog<br />

s.n., 28 Sep 1971 at US).<br />

The locality would be along the main road from the airport<br />

(then at Melville Hall) to Roseau at less than 100 m. The<br />

species is presumably adventive.<br />

Goatweed, du thd pays.<br />

Leaves all alternate, oblanceolate, narrowly tapered and<br />

upper half coarsely toothed; calyx lobes deeply divided,<br />

narrow, commonly ciliate; corolla (flowers) white.<br />

Neotropical weed; in western <strong>Dominica</strong> near seacoast in<br />

disturbed places: Cabrits (Hodge 3706, Whitefoord 4076),<br />

Colihaut (Ernst 2119). Scotts Head (Hodge 1612, Webster<br />

13451, Tarou cliffs (Nicolson 2007).<br />

Caribs make a tea <strong>of</strong> this against diarrhea (Hodge and Taylor,<br />

1957:605). Adjanohoun et al. (1985) reported other medicinal<br />

uses.<br />

Plants from the beach (Hodge 1612, Nicolson 2007) are<br />

much more pubescent than those from higher elevations.<br />

Leaves petiolate, ovate, serrate, <strong>of</strong>ten reddish beneath;<br />

pedicels -1 cm long; flowers blue; capsule equaling the calyx<br />

(enclosed).<br />

Introduced weed from Old World, now widely distributed; in<br />

<strong>Dominica</strong> a weed in fields or along roads: Aivoici (Stehle 6436<br />

in part), Baiac road (Whitefoord 4630), Castle Bruce (Wilbur<br />

7979), Clarke Hall (Ernst 1520, Webster 13409 in part),<br />

Delices (Whitefoord 3681), Grand Bay road (Hodge 814, La<br />

Chaudiere (Hodge 3648), Lisdara (Hodge 2459), Portsmouth<br />

(Hodge 816), road to Rosalie from Castle Bruce junction (Ernst<br />

1903), Sylvania (Hodge 815, mixed with Stemodiu verticillata).<br />

More or less prostrate herb; leaves ovate, serrate, petiolate,<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten red beneath; flowers k sessile, white; capsule becoming<br />

longer than calyx.<br />

Neotmpical weed; in <strong>Dominica</strong> on rocks in streams or in wet<br />

places: Bataka (Stehlt 6093), Deux Branches (Hodge 3470), La<br />

Chaudibre (Hodge 3523), Layou River mouth (Ernst 1519),<br />

Laudat (Eggers 693, north slope <strong>of</strong> Trois Pitons by road (Ernst<br />

1241A), Salybia (Stehlt 6383).<br />
