west coast: Badineau Estate (Hodge 2232), Cabrits (Ernst<br />

2097, Whitefoord 3994), Grand Savanne (Stern & Wusshausen<br />

2454,2458), Pointe Ronde (Hodge 2654).<br />

Zanthoxylum Linnaeus<br />

Zanthoxylum spinosum (Swartz) Swartz was attributed to<br />

<strong>Dominica</strong> by Grisebach (1860:137) as Tobiniu spinosu<br />

(Linnaeus) Desvaux ex Hamilton. As suggested by Howard<br />

(1988, 4:567), the <strong>Dominica</strong>n material collected by Imray is<br />

probably misidentified.<br />

1-3 mm long.<br />

Neotropics; in interior <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong> and along west: Clarke<br />

Hall (Ernst 1974, Nicolson 2001, Stern & Wusshuusen 2417),<br />

Laudat (Hodge 2034), Petit Coulibri (Whitefoord 6008, seen at<br />

Syndicate and near Woodford Hill, DHN!). Flowering April,<br />

fruiting in July.<br />

Large tree with stout spines: follicles connate below or to<br />

middle, with prominent glands.<br />

Neotropics; in lowlands <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong>: Cabrit Swamp (Emst<br />

1181), Clarke Hall (Stern & Wusshuusen 2439). Flowering in<br />

April, fruiting in July.<br />

L'epineux, l'epineux blanc.<br />

Shrub or tree to 10 m with stout spines; follicles solitary or<br />

paired, with prominent glands.<br />

Neotropics; in lowlands <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong> to 500 m: Badineau<br />

Estate (Hodge 2224), Carib Reserve (Hodge 3370), Fond Hunte<br />

Estate (Whitefoord 4309), Layou River mouth (Stern &<br />

Wusshuusen 2480, South Chiltern (Ernst 1875), Woodford<br />

Hill Bay (Wilbur 8308). Flowering at 500 m in July, fruiting<br />

near sea level in July-August.<br />

Originally described from <strong>Dominica</strong>. Doubtfully distinct<br />

from Zanthoxylum rhoifolium Lamarck (teste Wilson in North<br />

Amer. Fl., 1911,25(3):196).<br />

west coastal woods and scrub: Badineau Estate (Hodge 2225))<br />

Canefield (Whitefoord 6098), Gabriel (Wilbur 8234)) Grand<br />

Savanne (Wilbur 7655), Hillsborough Estate (Webster 13288),<br />

Macoucherie Estate (Nicolson 2044), Mero (Ernst 1144A,<br />

1428), Salisbury (Whitefoord 4530). Flowering April-June,<br />

fruiting July-October.<br />
