Hodge and Taylor (1957:610) reported the wood is used for<br />
posts, the fruits are eaten by birds, and the bark may be used for<br />

Medium to large tree to 10 m; stipules to 3 cm, soon<br />
deciduous and leaving a circular scar; leaves obovate, to 40 cm<br />
long, with white tufts at juncwe <strong>of</strong> lateral veins and midrib;<br />
inflorescence large, with fragrant, white flowers; hits capsular.<br />
Typical subspecies from Guadeloupe to St. Vincent (other<br />
subspecies in Jamaica and Cuba, teste Steyermark); common in<br />
mid-elevations <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong> from lowlands to 800 m: Bataca<br />

Flowers are mixed with those <strong>of</strong> Petraea kohautiana to brew<br />

attached to elongate filaments: fruit a ridged berry >1 cm long.<br />
Scattered from Jamaica to Trinidad; apparently rare and to be<br />
sought in <strong>Dominica</strong>: Layou Flats (Ramage s.n.), sine loc.<br />
(Imray 326 at K, Imray s.n. at GH).<br />
In Guadeloupe from seaside to 800 m, a useful timber in<br />
Grenada. Confusable with Erithalis, but leaves not obovate,<br />
and Psychotria, but flowers rather longer-stalked and ovule<br />
position different.<br />

Diodia apiculata (Willdenow ex Roemer & Schultes)<br />
Schumann was attributed to <strong>Dominica</strong> by VBlez (1957: 112). as<br />
Diodia rigida Chamisso & Schlechtendal. The species has<br />
extremely narrowly linear leaves and the awns <strong>of</strong> the stipules<br />
are glabrous. No collection from <strong>Dominica</strong> has been seen and<br />
its presence is unlikely.
