Ximenia americana<br />

Ximenia americana Linnaeus. 1753:1193.-Sleumer, 1984:89.<br />

Usually thorny shrub or small tree; flowers in simple or<br />

compound fascicles <strong>of</strong> 1-many flowers; petal hairs white when<br />

fresh, orange when dry; ovary superior; fruit an edible drupe.<br />

Tropics and subtropics; new record for <strong>Dominica</strong>, infrequent<br />

on dry west coast: Colihaut (Wilbur 8276). Fruiting in August.<br />

Our specimen is <strong>of</strong> the typical variety.<br />

OLEACEAE<br />

Noronhia emarginata (Lamarck) Du Petit-Thouars, French<br />

kenip, was cultivated in the Roseau Botanic Garden (Hodge<br />

3948).<br />

1. Calyx inconspicuous, -2 mm long; petals united only at<br />

base, lobes linear. ............. Chionanthus<br />

1. Calyx conspicuous, with linear lobes -1 cm long; petals<br />

united half their length, lobes 6-9, broad. .. Jusminum<br />

Chionanthus Linnaeus<br />

<strong>Dominica</strong>n specimens are <strong>of</strong>ten misdetermined as Chionanthus<br />

(Linociera) domingensis, which has a glabrous and ‘/2-3/4<br />

united calyx.<br />

With reluctance I disagree with Dr.Steam (1977) and restore<br />

the original feminine gender <strong>of</strong> this generic name.<br />

Shrub or tree to 6 m (dbh to 6 cm); leaves ovate-lanceolate,<br />

Guatemala, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico through the Lesser<br />

Antilles into northern S. America; in <strong>Dominica</strong> on slopes above<br />

coasts: Fond Hunte Estate (Whitefoord 4444), Grand Savanne<br />

(Stern & Wasshausen 2452), Grand Bay (Ernst 1067), Petit<br />

Soufrikre Bay (Stern & Wasshausen 2478), Wallhouse (Eggers<br />

863). Flowering April (south coast), July (east coast), October<br />

pond Hunte), December (Wallhouse) and fruiting July (Grand<br />

Savanne).<br />

Martinique; in <strong>Dominica</strong> (new record) without locality):<br />

Fishlock 15. The specimen flowered in 1915 but no month is<br />

mentioned. Fruiting material, such as cited under the preceding<br />

species, cannot yet be placed with certainty without flowers.<br />

Aiton are reported as cultivated on <strong>Dominica</strong> by<br />

Howard (1989,6:81-83).<br />
