Ouratea guildingii (Planchon) Urban (“Guildingi”), with<br />
serrate leaves to 10 cm long, has been collected in the Roseau<br />
Botanic Garden (Whitefoord 6122).<br />
Ouratea ilicifolia (A.P. Candolle) Baillon, with spiny<br />
Zlex-like leaves, occurs only in the Greater Antilles. The<br />
citation for the type locality and other specimens cited by<br />
Dwyer (1944: 130) as “<strong>Dominica</strong>” is an error for the <strong>Dominica</strong>n<br />
Republic (Hispaniola).<br />

Tree to 9 m; leaves entire, elliptic, 20-40 cm long; flower<br />
yellow: immature fruits with green carpels and a spherical, red<br />
toms, mature fruits with red carpels and black torus.<br />
Guadeloupe; in northern rainforest <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong>, 100-450<br />
m: Borne (Webster 13485), Dleau Gommier (Nicolson 4059),<br />
Hampstead River (Hodge 3669, La Chaudiere (Hodge 3669,<br />

Lake-Laudat area (DeFilipps 145, Lloyd 52, Nicolson 1832,<br />
Smith 10217, Wilbur 7453), La Chaudiere (Hodge 3650),<br />

Only the typical subspecies is found on <strong>Dominica</strong>. The other,<br />
Sauvagesia erecta subsp. brownei (Planchon) Sastre (1971:21),<br />
is restricted to Cuba, Jamaica, and Belize. Adjanohoun et al.<br />
(1985145, pl. 112) reported medicinal uses <strong>of</strong> a decoction.<br />
Bornstein (in Howard, 1989, 5300) disagreed with me<br />
(Sastre, 1971:5,27) about the typification.<br />
