fruits reddish and becoming blue-black, ellipsoid to obovoid,<br />
<strong>of</strong>ten 2x longer than wide.<br />
Puerto Rico, Lesser Antilles, and South America to Peru;<br />
interior <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong>, mostly at mid- to upper elevations:<br />
Breakfast River (Hodge 1894), Laiou Forest (Ramage s.n.),<br />
Laudat to Freshwater Lake area (Chambers 2687, Eggers 1042,<br />
Hodge 1833, 1894, Nicolson 4088, Smith 10294, Stern &<br />
Wasshausen 2566, Webster 13246, Wilbur 8253), Pont Casse<br />
(Lloyd 778), Rosehill near Morne Anglais (Eggers 732), South<br />
Chiltern (Ernst 1856), Sylvania (Wilbur 7710), Wallhouse<br />
Valley (Eggers 453). Flowering June- August, fruiting January-mch.<br />
The specimens from South Chiltern and Sylvania (both in<br />
bud) have remarkably large leaves, matched only by specimens<br />
from St. Lucia, which have extraordinarily large fruits (to 3 cm<br />
x 1 cm) that McVaugh (in Howard, 1989,5509) suggests may<br />
represent a distinct species.<br />

Tree to 10 m with bark reddish, papery; leaves elliptic and<br />
widest at or slightly below middle, to 14 cm x 4 cm, acuminate<br />
at apex, base rounded to obtuse, pubescent along midrib above<br />
and below; inflorescence loose and thin-branched; flowers<br />
white; disk glabrous; fruits globose.<br />
Central America, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe,<br />
Martinique, St. Vincent, Grenada, Trinidad; in <strong>Dominica</strong>,<br />
usually in drier areas: Carib Reserve (Hodge 3265), Glasham<br />
(Nicolson 2091), Salisbury (Stern & Wasshausen 2588).<br />
Flowering August-November.<br />

Tree; leaves obovate-oblanceolate, widest beyond middle, to<br />
10 cm x 4.5 cm, obtuse at apex, the base cuneate-attenuate;<br />
inflorescence stiff and erect; disk glabrous; fruit f globose.<br />
Guadeloupe to northeastern South America; in <strong>Dominica</strong>n<br />
rainforests at 600 m: lower north slope <strong>of</strong> Trois Pitons (Ernst<br />
1808). Flowering June.<br />

Small tree to 6 m with deep red heartwood; leaves elliptic,<br />
short-acuminate, base rounded, glossy above, to 10 cm x 4 cm;<br />
panicles f terminal, densely pubescent, flowers & sessile; calyx<br />
persistent, incurved in fruit, pubescent on both sides; disk<br />
densely pubescent; fruit globose, pubescent, ribbed, black in<br />
maturity.<br />
St. Lucia; new record for <strong>Dominica</strong>, known only from Pont<br />
Cas& area -500 m; path to Morne Coumnne from Point Lo10<br />
(Ernst 1981, Webster 13233), road to Castle Bruce and Rosalie<br />
(Stern & Wasshausen 2558). Flowering June, fruiting late July.<br />

Tree to 12 m; leaves to 9 cm x 3 cm, lanceolate to ovate,<br />
rounded to k cordate at base and acuminate, <strong>of</strong>ten caudate at<br />
apex, midvein impressed, usually bearing a line <strong>of</strong> erect hairs<br />
above; inflorescence loose, densely pubescent with spreading<br />
hairs, disk densely pubescent; fruits globose, pink but<br />
becoming black.<br />
S. Mexico and adjoining countries, Antilles and northern<br />
South America to Amazonian Peru; in <strong>Dominica</strong>n rainforests<br />
and dry woodlands from 15-525 m: Clarke Hall (Gates Clark<br />
D-1, Ernst 1438, 1986, Stern & Wasshausen 2416), Fond<br />
Hunte Estate (Whitefoord 4336), Imperial Road (Narodny 3),<br />

Tree to 13 m; branchlets strongly and acutely angled; leaves<br />
aromatic with odor <strong>of</strong> lemon or citronella (“bay rum”),<br />
coriaceous and lustrous, elliptic to obovate, rounded to obtuse<br />
at apex, rounded to cuneate at base, to 13.5 cm x 6 cm, midvein<br />
impressed above; inflorescences 5-10 cm long, calyx lobes 5,<br />
densely pubescent within, disk pubescent; ovules 4-7 in each<br />
<strong>of</strong> 2 locules; fruits obovoid or ellipsoid, -1 cm long, contracted<br />
to a thick neck beneath the flaring calyx.<br />
Cuba?, Puerto Rico into South America (cultivated there and<br />
elsewhere); in <strong>Dominica</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten in coastal thickets to 450 m:<br />
