Undershrub; leaflets 4-6(-9) pairs, linear-oblanceolate,<br />

glabrous above, 1-2.5 cm x 0.3-0.7 cm; flowers reddish<br />

purple to white; pod 3-4 cm long.<br />

Asiatic but widespread; on dry west coast <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong>:<br />

Soufri&re (Lloyd 448), sine loc. (Zmray 29 at K). The Imray<br />

specimen was misidentified by Grisebach (1860:182) as 1:<br />

cinerea.<br />

Glycine lobialis Linnaeus f., 1782325.<br />

Slender twiner; stems villous; leaflets 3, ovate, k acute,<br />

1-5.5 cm x -3 cm; calyx 5-lobed, corolla white or pink;<br />

stamens united, alternately sterile; pod 3-5 cm x 0.3 cm, the<br />

glabrous style bent at right angle to pod; seeds dark brown.<br />

Pantropical; reported for <strong>Dominica</strong> by Velez (1957:101),<br />

confirmed by vegetative elements mixed with Rhynchosia<br />

minima from Grand Savanne (Wilbur 8351).<br />

This taxon was named Teramnus labialis subsp. arabicus<br />

Verdcourt (1970272), the subspecies (Africa and Neotropics)<br />

being defined by granulate rather than shining seeds.<br />

Perennial; leaflets 7-12 cm x 4-6 cm; peduncle stout, -10<br />

cm long; flowers short-pedicelled, aggregated in short racemes<br />

with swollen nodes; corolla showy, pink or mauve, variegated;<br />

pod 8-10 cm x 1 cm, straight or a little curved; seeds 10-15,<br />

-2 mm long.<br />

Pantropical; southwestern <strong>Dominica</strong> at 500 m: South<br />

Chiltern (Hodge 1577).<br />

Trailing vine; stems glabrous; leaves 3-foliolate, stipellate;<br />

stipules not auricled, leaflets 3-9 cm x 1-5 cm, rounded;<br />

flowers yellow, clustered in short raceme on a long peduncle;<br />

standard -1.5 cm long; stamens 9+1; style bearded along inner<br />

side, stigma oblique; pod turgid, elongate, 2-valved.<br />

Pantropical; common strand plant in <strong>Dominica</strong> along coasts:<br />

Cabrit Swamp (Hodge 624), Castle Bruce (Ernst 1468, Wilbur<br />

7991), Hatton Garden (Hodge 2962), Layou (Fosberg 48305),<br />

Marigot (Hodge 622,623), Melville Hall (Wilbur 8039), Pointe<br />

Ronde (Hodge 2733, Rosalie Point (Whitefoord 3732),<br />

Salybia (Chambers 2636).<br />

Lackey and D’ Arcy (1980:797-799) noted that Vigna<br />

marina (Burman) Memll may be the correct name for this<br />

species. Alston (1931) separated V. marina from V. luteola.<br />

Other species may be found on <strong>Dominica</strong>. Vigna unguiculata<br />

(Linnaeus) Walpers,the black-eyed pea, with auricled stipules,<br />

was collected on road beside the Macoucheri River (Whitefoord<br />

5970).<br />

Zornia Gmelin (Faboid)<br />

Zornia microphylla<br />

Zornio microphyllo Desvaux, 1826a:324.-Mohlenbmkock. 1%1:123.<br />

Herbs; stipules persistent, attached above base; leaflets 2, to<br />

1.5 cm x 0.7 cm; bracts -2 mm broad, -3x longer than broad;<br />

calyx campanulate, upper 2 lobes united; corolla yellow;<br />

stamens united, alternately long and short; loment articulated,<br />

upper suture straight, the articles indehiscent, armed.<br />

Cuba, Hispaniola, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Grenada,<br />

reported as common in one locality on east coast and an<br />

occasional weed along west coast <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong>: Colihaut<br />

(Wilbur 8270), Fond Hunte Estate (Whitefoord 4455), Hatton<br />

Garden (Hodge 2963), Mero (Ernst 1936, 2143). Flowering<br />

April-July, fruiting August.<br />

FLACOURTIACEAE<br />

Flacourtia jangomas (Loureiro) Raeuschel (including<br />

Flacourtia cataphracta Roxburgh ex Willdenow), is a dioecious<br />

shrub with thorny stems and a berry-like fruit. It was<br />

cultivated in the Roseau Botanic Garden and has been collected<br />

as a hedge at Clarke Hall (Ernst 1416, 1978, Stern &<br />

Wasshausen 2421), in thicket at Morne Daniel (Whitefoord<br />

6060), and beside the Canefield River (Whitefoord 6112).<br />

Hydnocarpus pentandra (Hamilton) Oken (incl. Hydnocarpus<br />

wightiana Blume and Hydnocarpus laurifolia Sleumer, see<br />

Nicolson et al., 1988: 147) is a large tree with woody, spherical<br />

hits, the source <strong>of</strong> chaulmoogra oil once used to treat leprosy.<br />

Several rows were found in the Roseau Botanic Garden<br />

(Nicolson 4216). It has 5 stamens and serrate leaves.<br />

Scopolia chinensis (roureiro) Clos collected in the Roseau<br />

Botanic Garden (Hodge 908, 968) but was misidentified as
