Prostrate herb; flowers pink, on erect spikes; pods deflexed,<br />

slightly down-curved.<br />

Old World weed introduced into neotropics; new record for<br />

<strong>Dominica</strong>: Scotts Head (Whitefoord 5550). Whitefoord<br />

(1989: 145) reported this collection as Indig<strong>of</strong>era hartwegii<br />

Rydberg.<br />

Wilbur 8256), Carib Reserve (Hodge 3396), Colihaut (Ernst<br />

1134), Dublanc (Whitefoord 4289), Grand Savanne area<br />

(Chambers 2791, Hodge 3769, Wilbur 8342), Scotts Head<br />

(Hodge 1619, Wilbur 760I), South Chiltem (Stern & Wasshausen<br />

2531).<br />

Shrub; leaflets 7-13, 1.5 cm x 1 cm, obovate, rounded at<br />

apex; pod slightly torulose.<br />

Paleotropics, formerly widely cultivated as a dye source,<br />

now naturalized: Pointe Michel (Gillis 8118).<br />

Trees with evenly pinnate leaves and a gland between the<br />

leaflet pairs; flowers spicate or racemose; calyx 5-parted;<br />

corolla tubular to middle or beyond; stamens many, long<br />

exserted, united below; pod flat or terete and ribbed,<br />

indehiscent.<br />

Small tree to 4 m; leaflets in 2 to 4 pairs, ovate-lanceolate,<br />

6-12 cm x 3-4 cm; flowers white, pedicels 1-2 mm long;<br />

calyx 2-4 mm long; pods 7-11 cm x 2-2.5 cm, the margins<br />

elevated.<br />

Endemic; apparently rare in wet interior uplands from 750 to<br />

lo00 m: Laudat to Micotrin area (Ernst 1171, 2164, Hodge<br />

1924, Whitefoord 4189), upper Layou drainage (Stehle 6330),<br />

sine loc. (Zmruy 336 at K, fl. (type)). Emst collections flowering<br />

in August, fruiting in May; Stehle collection flowering in April.<br />

The Imray collection was cited as I. murtinicensis Presl by<br />

Grisebach (1860:227), another high elevation endemic (<strong>of</strong><br />

Martinique) that has broader and bullate leaves.<br />

Poix doux marrons.<br />

Tree to 25 m; rhachis winged, with 3-5 pairs <strong>of</strong> leaflets;<br />

flowers forming a rather flat-topped raceme, pedicels to 1 cm<br />

long; calyx c1 cm long, red-pubescent; pods elongate, terete,<br />

grooved to ribbed.<br />

South American species penetrating the Antilles to Guadeloupe;<br />

frequent tree in lowlands and midlands <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dominica</strong>:<br />

Bellevue (Eggers 644), Carib Reserve (Taylor 12), Clarke Hall<br />

area (Clarke 06, Ernst 1209, Hodge 610, Nicolson 1803),<br />

Indian River (Finlay? s.n., 16 Jul 1792 at K), La Chaudiere<br />

(Hodge 3546), La Plaine (Whitefoord 5363), above Laudat,<br />

-700 m (Beard 654, Chambers 2684), Lisdara (Cooper 183,<br />

Hodge 2352), Mome Aux Diables (Wasshausen & Ayensu<br />

378), 2 miles [3 km] south <strong>of</strong> Pagua Bay (Long & Norstog<br />

3386), Rosalie Valley (Lloyd 707), Soufriere (Eggers IlO),<br />

Sylvania (Hodge 1046), Syndicate (Hodge 2707, Whitefoord<br />

4342,5634,5958), sine loc. (Imray 340 at K).<br />

This species can be confused with Inga Vera Willdenow <strong>of</strong><br />

Central America and the Greater Antilles, which has a<br />

spiciform raceme with almost sessile flowers and calyces 1 cm
