Personal statement:
Having started riding horses at a very young age, I have been involved in equine sports
practice as an intern (Dierenkliniek Emmeloord, the Netherlands) and at specialist level in
a University Hospital (Utrecht University). The experience I have gained at the different
institutes and at the different grades has given me valuable hands-on experience in all
aspects of equine practice.
As a European accredited Equine Internal Medicine specialist, my main interest lies within
Details of research contributions:
The research during my residency was focused on emerging infectious diseases in the
horse, with special reference to tick-related pathogens. During my PhD I have explored
this subject further by investigating the impact and prevalence of tick-related diseases in
horses in the Netherlands. My research has resulted in the publication 14 papers in peer
reviewed journals (4 in preparation) and 7 abstracts in congress proceedings.
The defense of my PhD is planned for Decemer 20 th 2012.
Teaching contributions:
Since my appointment as resident and lecturer (2001), I have taught equine internal
medicine to final year veterinary students in clinical rotations. On occasions, I have also
taught undergraduates. Having gained experienced working in referral hospitals and in an
ambulatory practice, I feel I can teach students both from a practical point of view as
well as more advanced aspects of internal medicine. I also try to share my passion in the
challenge of resolving very difficult clinical cases.
I have taught veterinary students in different institutions, using different teaching
methods. This has provided me with broad teaching experience and a clear
understanding that integrating both clinical cases and basic veterinary science enhances
the impact of teaching.
