The right to education<br />

Foreigners have <strong>the</strong> right to enrol <strong>in</strong> national educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions, but must fulfil<br />

<strong>the</strong> necessary entry requirement to enrol <strong>in</strong> a secondary school or <strong>in</strong> a higher education<br />

programme. Here is a brief overview <strong>of</strong> education system <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong><br />

Slovenia.<br />

K<strong>in</strong>dergarten<br />

Parents may place <strong>the</strong>ir child <strong>in</strong>to k<strong>in</strong>dergarten <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> period between <strong>the</strong> age<br />

<strong>of</strong> 11 months and until his or her entry <strong>in</strong>to elementary school. A child may be<br />

registered <strong>in</strong>to k<strong>in</strong>dergarten all year round on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> an application form,<br />

which can be obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> most stationery shops. When register<strong>in</strong>g your child <strong>in</strong>to<br />

k<strong>in</strong>dergarten you will also be required to provide a paediatrician’s exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

statement about <strong>the</strong> child’s health status.<br />

If you are a f<strong>in</strong>ancial welfare recipient, you will be partially exempt from<br />

pay<strong>in</strong>g k<strong>in</strong>dergarten fees. This benefit can be arranged at <strong>the</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

unit.<br />

Elementary school<br />

The elementary school system <strong>in</strong> Slovenia is mandatory, free and lasts for n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

years. As a parent, you are required to register a child that is about to turn six<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year <strong>in</strong>to first grade <strong>of</strong> elementary school. Enrolment for <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g school year takes place <strong>in</strong> February and should be performed at <strong>the</strong><br />

school located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood <strong>of</strong> your temporary or permanent <strong>residence</strong>.
