This booklet is written with a very specific circle <strong>of</strong> readers <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, which is why two<br />
fur<strong>the</strong>r options for acquisition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> citizenship are set out below: <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong><br />
citizenship by marriage to a Slovenian citizen and <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong> citizenship for<br />
persons with a refugee status.<br />
Acquisition <strong>of</strong> citizenship by marriage to a Slovenian<br />
citizen<br />
You may apply for citizenship <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia if you:<br />
• have been married to a citizen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia for at least three<br />
years;<br />
• live <strong>in</strong> Slovenia cont<strong>in</strong>uously for at least one year before apply<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
citizenship;<br />
• have a temporary or permanent <strong>residence</strong> permit;<br />
• have obta<strong>in</strong>ed a Slovenian language certificate;<br />
• have been work<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> a permanent employment contract for at<br />
least two years or, alternatively, you have been receiv<strong>in</strong>g remuneration on <strong>the</strong><br />
basis <strong>of</strong> a fixed-term employment contract for at least two years, and rema<strong>in</strong><br />
employed while your application is be<strong>in</strong>g considered;<br />
• are unemployed and your partner agrees to ensure your means <strong>of</strong> subsistence,<br />
if he or she is employed.<br />
Double citizenship <strong>of</strong> persons married to a Slovenian citizen may be possible only<br />
when a foreigner has special reasons why hav<strong>in</strong>g both citizenships would be more<br />
beneficial for him or her as well as for <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia. The Government<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia is <strong>the</strong> entity that decides upon this matter, and not <strong>the</strong><br />
M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Interior. The decision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Government is f<strong>in</strong>al and no appeal can be<br />
made aga<strong>in</strong>st it.
