2.3 THE ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP<br />

There are several ways <strong>of</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g citizenship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia. In general<br />

you must comply with <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g conditions to obta<strong>in</strong> citizenship by means <strong>of</strong><br />

naturalisation:<br />

• you are aged 18 years or more;<br />

• you must be released from your current citizenship or, alternatively, be able<br />

to demonstrate that you will be released from it, provided that you are granted<br />

<strong>the</strong> citizenship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia;<br />

• you have been liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia for a period <strong>of</strong> ten years, <strong>of</strong><br />

which five were spent cont<strong>in</strong>uously <strong>in</strong> Slovenia before apply<strong>in</strong>g for citizenship,<br />

and your status as an alien has been arranged;<br />

• you have secured adequate f<strong>in</strong>ancial means, ensur<strong>in</strong>g that you are capable <strong>of</strong><br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g material and social security for yourself as well as for <strong>the</strong> persons<br />

you have to support;<br />

• your knowledge <strong>of</strong> Slovenian is sufficient for <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> everyday communication;<br />

you will be required to prove this with a certificate, confirm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that you have passed <strong>the</strong> basic level Slovenian language exam;<br />

• you have not been convicted by a judgement which has <strong>the</strong> force <strong>of</strong> res judicata<br />

(to unconditional imprisonment longer than three months), or you have<br />

not been sentenced to conditional imprisonment for a trial period, longer<br />

than one year;<br />

• you have not had your <strong>residence</strong> status <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia annulled;<br />

• public order, security and defence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country will not be jeopardised if you<br />

become a citizen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia;<br />

• you have no exist<strong>in</strong>g tax liabilities;<br />

• you take an oath, declar<strong>in</strong>g respect for free democratic constitutional order<br />

as set out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Constitution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Slovenia.
