Inguinal surgery comprises inguinal hernia repair, orchidopexy,<br />

orchiectomy, removal of cyst of <strong>the</strong> spermatic cord,<br />

ligation of patent processus vaginalis and hydrocelectomy. The<br />

blocks of <strong>the</strong> nerves of <strong>the</strong> abdominal wall have been evaluated<br />

in combination to general and spinal anes<strong>the</strong>sia and in<br />

comparison to multimodal analgesia.<br />

The IIB is among <strong>the</strong> most common (70% of all peripheral<br />

nerve blocks) used mainly <strong>for</strong> children between 4 and 7 years of<br />

age (Ban 2010). Inguinal hernia repair is <strong>the</strong> most frequent<br />

operation in which iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerve block<br />

is administered toge<strong>the</strong>r with general anes<strong>the</strong>sia. The block<br />

appears to be safe and effective in reducing pain scores and<br />

analgesic request (Dalens 2001). However, <strong>the</strong> success rate may<br />

be as low as 70-80% with blind techniques and complications<br />

may occur (Lim 2002, Fell 1987). Intraoperative IIB decreases<br />

postoperative pain, analgesic use, and promotes early<br />

ambulation, recovery and discharge in children undergoing<br />

hernia repair.
