Serotonin syndrome
Serotonin syndrome is a serious, potential fatal condition caused by excessive action of the
serotonin neurotransmitter in the central nervous system usually by increased action of serotonin
re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a common class of anti-depressants.
Augmented effects of SSRI’s can occur through decreased clearance of the drug, drug interactions
or through increased serum levels of precursors such as tryptophan.
Symptoms and signs of serotonin syndrome include confusion, hallucinations, agitation,
coma, rigidity, tremors, hyer-reflexia, autonomic instability and hyperthermia.
