Pulmonary artery catheter
A pulmonary artery catheter is a catheter that is fed from the internal jugular vein (or subclavian
vein) through the right side of the heart into the pulmonary artery. It is used to estimate
the preload of the left side of the heart. It can also be used to measure cardiac output
by the thermodilution technique. It can be useful in determining the cause of shock in critically
ill patients. Unfortunately, studies have failed to show an improvement in outcomes as
a result of this diagnostic tool.
