Pseudocholinesterase deficiency
Pseudocholinesterase deficiency is an inheritable enzyme deficiency of the enzyme that
breaks down succinylcholine. Those affected will demonstrate prolonged effect of succinylcholine.
Deficiency can result as a genetic defect, as a consequence of various medications or a result
of liver disease. The latter two causes are usually relative while the genetic defect can produce
a complete lack of pseudocholinesterase function in homozygous individuals. Individuals
who are heterozygous have reduced (but still measurable) pseudocholinesterase activity.
