Patient controlled analgesia
Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) permits the patient to control his own analgesia by activating
a button, which then triggers the intravenous delivery of a predetermined dose of an
opioid such as morphine or hydromorphone. Limits are set on the number of boluses per
unit time as well as on the minimum time that must elapse between doses (lockout interval).
Complications of PCA include respiratory depression, nausea and vomiting, excessive sedation
and inadequate analgesia.
