Laryngoscope
A laryngoscope is the device used to expose the vocal cords in order to pass an endotracheal
tube. It is most commonly used under general anesthesia. It is used in most routine intubations.
The most common laryngoscope blade is the Macintosh blade. It is positioned in the vallecula
such that upward pressure on the tongue will expose the larynx.
The traditional laryngoscope allows direct laryngoscopy. Newer devices, such as the videolaryngoscope,
allow for indirect laryngoscopy where the larynx is viewed on a screen and a
direct line of sight is not achieved.
