Hypothermia
Hypothermia indicates a low core body temperature. Intra-operative loss of body heat can
occur through four mechanisms:
• Convection (e.g. exposure to drafts of cool air)
• Conduction (e.g. contact with cold operating room table)
• Evaporation (e.g. airway mucosa, prep solution, sweat)
• Radiation (e.g. temperature gradient between patient and operating room environment)
Hypothermia has effects on almost every organ system. These include decreased wound
healing, increased wound infection, decreased platelet function and increased systemic vascular
resistance.
