Glycogen
Glycogen is a polysaccharide that serves as a form of long-term energy storage. Glycogen is
primarily located in the liver and to a lesser extent, in muscle. Glycogen is broken down to
glucose and used to maintain serum glucose levels during fasting.
Glycogen synthesis and breakdown are controlled by insulin and glucagon, each hormone
counterbalancing the effect of the other.
