Four A’s of anesthesia<br />

Lack of Awareness: unconsciousness.<br />

Amnesia: lack of memory of the event.<br />

Analgesia: implies the abolition of the subconscious reactions to pain. This includes somatic<br />

reflexes (such as movement or withdrawal) as well as the autonomic reflexes (such as hypertension,<br />

tachycardia, sweating and tearing).<br />

Akinesia: implies lack of overt movement as well as the provision of adequate degree of<br />

muscle relaxation according to the procedure.<br />
