Colloids
Colloids are suspensions of protein or other complex organic particles. Examples of colloids
are albumin (5%, 25%), hydroxyethyl starches (Pentaspan ®, Voluven ® ), packed red blood
cell concentrates (PRBC), platelets and fresh frozen plasma (FFP).
Because of their suspended proteins (or complex starches), colloids have an oncotic pressure
similar to that of plasma and therefore replace blood loss in a 1:1 ratio.
