Balanced anesthesia
Balanced anesthesia is the practice of using combinations of agents, each for a specific purpose.
An example of a balanced technique would be the use of propofol for induction of anesthesia
followed by the administration of desflurane and nitrous oxide for maintenance of
unconsciousness, sufentanil for analgesia and rocuronium for muscle relaxation.
Prior to the development of the range of agents described above, ether or other volatile
agents were used to achieve all the goals of anesthesia in a non-specific fashion.
