PHENYLEPHRINE<br />

Class<br />

Sympathomimetic; vasopressor. Used in the treatment of<br />

hypotension.<br />

Mechanism of Action<br />

Direct agonist at the #-adrenergic receptor.<br />

Dose<br />

Bolus dose: 50-100 $g IV (adults)<br />

Misc.<br />

<strong>The</strong> clinician may observe diminished response of phenylephrine<br />

in patients receiving #-adrenergic blockers ordrugs<br />

with #-blocking action such as phenothiazines. On<br />

the other hand, there may be augmented response when<br />

given with other vasopressors such as vasopressin and<br />

ergonovine. Phenylephrine has prolonged action in patients<br />

using monoamine oxidase inhibitors.<br />

Infusion: 0.1-1.0 $g/kg/minute<br />
