business firms following flexible and customised
production strategies and providing diversified
service portfolios are overrepresented among
KIBS firms, especially in the case of IT and
professional services. Firms implementing such
production strategies invest more in the various
forms of knowledge development and rely to a
greater extent on the use of such radical forms
of organisational innovation like project-based
work that supports them in integrating external
knowledge sources.
The results presented briefly above call attention
to the necessity of further investigation of the
role of both KIBS and more traditional services
in the economic modernisation of Hungary. In
doing so, researchers should focus on both firmand
institutional level facilitators and inhibitors
of the service sector development. This requires
a combination of research methods: there is a
need for company-level case studies in order to
better understand the internal dynamics of the
service sector as a whole.
