GLOBAL CHANGES IN THE WORLD ECONO- MY: EMERGING SERVICE ECONOMY 6 ORGANISATIONAL INNOVATIONS IN THE HUNGARIAN KNOWLEDGE-INTENSIVE BUSINESS SERVICE SECTOR: LESSONS FROM A COMPANY SURVEY In the last few decades, the world economy has undergone a structural transformation process that can be described by an increasing role of the service sector within the national economies at the expense of manufacturing. According to the OECD, in 2005 the contribution of services to the GDP in the developed economies was around 70% with remarkable country differences (OECD 2007). The proportion of services in the economic output in the case of the USA is close to 80%, while it remains below 60% in South-Korea. In Hungary, services produce 65% of the GDP, which is around the European average. The position of the country is better than the Czech Republic or Slovakia but lags behind the Benelux-states and the Nordic countries. Table 1 illustrates the growing economic role of the service sector in some OECD-countries. Péter Csizmadia When evaluating the growing international importance of services, it is important to call attention to the changing internal structure of the sector, e.g. the increasing share of business services representing higher valueadded activities. Another important factor shaping the global economy is the different development dynamics of the manufacturing and service sectors. Globally, the service sector achieved 23.6% productivity growth accompanied by a 20.2 % employment increase. On the other hand, 28.8 % productivity growth and a 22.8 % employment decline were registered in the manufacturing sector (Sako, 2006). Seite page 103 Another important tendency is that the
