DIVISION NINE – REGULATION OF SIGNS<br />

(2) Except as provided in Section 902(2) <strong>of</strong> this bylaw, the placement <strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>fpremise<br />

sign on land anywhere this bylaw has applicability is expressly<br />

prohibited.<br />

904. Permits to be Obtained<br />

(1) With the exception <strong>of</strong> flag poles, wall signs and those signs identified in<br />

Section 902(2) <strong>of</strong> this bylaw, a sign permit shall be obtained from a Building<br />

Official for an engineered sign prior to the location, relocation, construction,<br />

reconstruction, alteration or extension <strong>of</strong> any sign.<br />

(2) The necessity for engineering for a sign will be determined by the Building<br />

Official based on the requirements <strong>of</strong> the “BC Building Code”.<br />

905. Sign Area<br />

(1) The sign area shall be not greater than:<br />

(a) 1.0 m² for real estate and political signs located on a parcel<br />

located in a built-up Residential zone.<br />

(b) 3.0 m² for real estate and political signs located on a parcel other<br />

than a built-up Residential zone and all signs in Special Use<br />

zones.<br />

(c) 3.0 m² for directory signs when comprised <strong>of</strong> only one face or<br />

1.5 m² per face when comprise <strong>of</strong> multiple faces.<br />

(d) 0.5 m² for a home occupation, short-term rental accommodation<br />

and community care facility signs.<br />

(e) 5.0 m² for construction and community identification signs.<br />

(2) For signs in Commercial and Comprehensive Development zones the<br />

maximum sign area shall be the lesser <strong>of</strong> 3.5 m² or:<br />

(a) the square root <strong>of</strong> (the total wall area x 10) for wall signs.<br />

(b) the square root <strong>of</strong> (the total wall area x 2) for free-standing signs.<br />

(3) For signs in Commercial and Comprehensive Development zones and<br />

where no building exists on the subject property, the maximum sign area<br />

shall not be greater than 3.5 m².<br />

(4) There shall be no size restriction on community events, community<br />

identification, government and “Neighbourhood Watch” signs.<br />
