THE LONG BLUE LINE > CLASS NOTES 1940 Ernest J. Fauss, Jr. ’42 is retired from Celanese Corporation. He also worked as a health inspector for the Allegany County Health Department and is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot. John D. Van Fossen ’49 (Lambda Chi Alpha) and wife Joana, moved from Lafayette, Va. to The Woodlands, Texas. They would enjoy hearing from other Marietta graduates. (Contact information is available from MC’s alumni office.) 1950 Dorothy O. O’Neill Burns ’50 and husband Norman still enjoy traveling, gardening and keeping in touch with friends. Last year, they crossed the Atlantic Ocean six times. Their longest trip was to Sri Lanka to visit their daughter and her family. Anne Hart Swenson ’51 (Sigma Kappa) is enjoying her retirement. Ann Potter McGurk ’53 hosted a gathering of 1953 graduates: Marcia Flower McCauley, Margi Hoyt Nasemann and Pat Walworth Wood. Sidney P. “Sid” Wattstein ’58 is spending seven months a year in his home in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida and the other five months in Stamford, Conn. This summer he enjoyed a Baltic cruise. He would like to wish those in the class of ’78 a Happy 70 th Birthday. > UNEXPECTED MEETING On a recent European trip, Mary Jean Heywood Tedrow ’59 (front row) and her husband, Allen, unexpectedly shared a riverboat cruise with another MC alumnus, David P. Prindle ’71, and his wife, Paula. 1960 Kurt P. Stocker ’60 was named to the NYSE Regulation board of directors in April. David M. Carris ’61 (Alpha Sigma Phi) retired from John T. Boyd Company, which is an international mining consulting company, after 43 years of service. Michael “Mike” J. DeMarco ’61 (Lambda Chi Alpha) is the proud grandpa of a granddaughter, Kristie Nicole DeMarco. She was born on April 28 to his youngest son. Mike and his wife Margaret are looking forward to seeing their new granddaughter when they return for Homecoming in October. Victor D. Powell ’62 reports that the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport is displaying his Valkyrie fixed wing hang glider that he built and flew over the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia. > ALUMNI NOTE Innovative dimensions SOWAR IS PIONEER IN 3-D INDUSTRY When Dick Sowar ’66 left Marietta College he had no idea where his career path would lead, but with a degree from a liberal arts institution he was well prepared. As it turns out, Sowar has been an innovator in the field of three-dimensional software, starting several companies and creating multiple products that pioneered an entire industry. While at Marietta, Sowar took the first computer programming course ever offered at the College. He was among students in the class who traveled to the nearby DuPont plant so they could get their hands on a computer. But that experience helped him find a job after graduation teaching computer programming at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton. While there for the next 12 years, Sowar got a master’s degree from the University of Dayton and in 1978 he moved to Boulder, Colo. for Esther L. Walp Steffens ’63 (Chi Omega) explored China and Tibet last summer. This year, she plans for her travels to take her back to Central America and the route of the Mayans. doctoral studies with one of the most well-known graphics professors in the country. “While I was working on my dissertation I got lured into a high tech start up company,” he explains. Eventually, he became the vice president for research and development for Graftek, <strong>Inc</strong>. “We were in a field called…computer aided design, or CAD,” he explains. By 1986 he wrote a business plan for another company called Spatial Technology and, by that point, had enough experience that a New York investor contributed $1 million. High tech software continued to be his specialty. Through the years, Sowar gained patents to protect the intellectual property rights of his products and by the time Spatial Technology sold in 2000, it had 650 clients around the world. “What we were building was 3-D modeling software that our customers such as Autodesk and HP would embed in their 3-D applications,” he explains. Sowar hasn’t slowed down a bit. Since 2000, he has started two additional companies – first, a consulting business called Geomenon and this year, Free Design <strong>Inc</strong>., which has developed technology that has garnered interest from the technology giants such as Pixar and Adobe. Free Design is targeting creative artists who are end users. “We think we’ll have a very popular product,” says Sowar. Visit www.freedesign-inc.com to give it a try. SHERRY BECK PAPROCKI Sandra G. (Sandie) Cook Carpenter ’65 enjoys gardening and hiking in the summers and skiing and being a substitute teacher at the local high school in the winters. Anne C. Sammons Anna ’66 continues to enjoy working as an elementary school counselor in Yakima, Wash. Her husband Joe retired in 2005 after 35 years working as a microbiologist. M A R I E T TA > 29
